i have tried to go online via my laptop(laptop is windows vista and is wireless) yesterday morning but could not do so. So i tried my p.c and found i could go online with that no problems...

i kept trying (nothing technical just making sure cables were attached properly, turning off/on power supplies etc) but again no joy.

i phoned up technical support, the advisor (after following her advice)told me that the default i.p address was not allowing me to connect. she gave me a number to phone and a second guy tried(at £1 per minute) to help me by trying to change the ipv4 address. he tried allsorts but to no avail. (he said he was legally only allowed to be on the phone for 20 mins = £20 down and no solution, can i challenge that charge since i didnt actually have the issue resolved lol).

He said it is 1 of 2 things. it is either the router (belkin wireless G Plus MIMO Router) or the laptop and 2 test the laptop at a friends who has wireless to see if i can get a connection there, if i can then it is the router, if not its the laptop.

basically, i would really appreciate if someone could run through some processes with me either online or phone(if in uk) to see if you guys can help me out. would be great if u could help me solve this issue, or if not, at least be able to tell me definitively what is wrong.

ok, any more info needed just ask. thanks.

And if that does not work - take the router out of the equation and connect directly to the modem and see if that works.

If it does then its the settings on the router, if it doesnt its the connection from your ISP

All this assumes that during your 20 minute adventure with the call centre you went through all the basic settings. For example, are you sure your LAN connection is enabled? Same with your wireless? Are the internet protocol settings (TCP/IP) set to automatic or were you given a manual configuration ip and DNS addresses?

ok, i took router out of equation and connected laptop directly to modem, still no connection.

first off, i phoned virgin media for free, i ran through a couple of things by a nice indian girl, and then when she couldnt help me resolve the issue, she gave me the £1 per minute number, which i didnt realise was £1 per min until i was on the line, by this time im thinking what the hell if it sorts the problem out. after 20 minutes he said he was only legally allowed to go 20 mins so i left it there.

i think maybe i didnt point out what i went through with him. he tried changing my ipv4 address but either couldnt do it or that was not the problem. either way after 20 mins it wasnt solved so i came 2 u guys. SO PLEASE SAY YOU CAN FIX MY BABY, IM LOST WITHOUT HER LOL

dont know if this will help.

just got a message up on my laptop which i have not seen before

Windows has detected an IP address conflict

Another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer. Contact your network administrator for help resolving this issue. More details are available in the Windows System event log.

I do not use Vista but it should be the same. Just right click on the little monitor icon in the lower left near the clock and click open network connections.

That should open a window showing your wireless and lan connections. Click on one of them and you will see a number of ticked boxes. The last should be Internet protocol (TCP/IP)

First make sure it IS ticked and open it. Tell us what you see please!

the 'obtain an ip adress atuomatically' is NOT checked.

'Use the following IP adress' is checked

the IP address is 192.168.2.1

subnet mask is 255.255.255.0

There are a few things here.

1. I assume that if you do the same with your PC you will get the same IP address.

2. Try changing that to automatic (you may have to run as an administrator) and reboot. We need to see if the ISP will assign a dynamic IP address for that lappy. Do this with the LAN connection first as that will be the quickest to assess.

3. Have you ever tried to connect to the internet with the PC disconnected from the router?
