Please change the Laptop to automatic is not that the one we are talking about?

Don't change the settings in the one that is working.

One last thing make sure that both the LAN and Wireless show as enabled when you go to open network connections.

I almost hate to ask this question but what is it you see when you run your pointer over the little network icon. Does it say you are connected at all?

If you cannot connect now reboot and try again.

With all due respect, this is going nowhere because it jumps around so much that it is impossible to evaluate where things stand.

We need to go back and check things out from the beginning. If you suddenly get conected to the internet please let us know otherwise just supply all of the information requested and post it at one time. If there is something that you don't understand then post that as well.

1. The small Icon near the clock where you went to go to your network. What does it say when you run your mouse over it. It should say something about your connection. There should be 2 icons if both your lan and wireless are enabled. This is your connection to the router not the internet.

2. Make sure that automatic is set in the the IP protocols for both the lan and the wireless.

3. Do as suggested before and go to run and type cmd. When the black box comes up type ipconfig and enter. What are you getting on the top as noted before?

Can I also add onto bee's post, that I suggest since you have changed the IP settings for your laptop to automatic, you also reboot your router aswell as your laptop and tell us the results :)

Hello Jimmy. I am no good at networking but perhaps answering the below questions might make things clearer.

  • Could you connect to the internet before yesterday?

    • If not, then are you trying to set up a new connection on it?
    • If yes, then did you make any recent changes before you first encountered the problem?

[*] Are you trying to connect your home computer and laptop at the same time?

[*] What exactly are you doing? Post in brief the procedure you are following so that we may be sure that you are doing exactly what you intend to do.

[*] If possible, please post some screen shots of your home computer and your laptop so that we might gain a rough idea of how your networking settings are configured.

By the way, we will need to gain some information regarding your network configuration. So please start Command Prompt and type in the following command:

ipconfig /all >> desktop/ipconfig.txt

Then browse to your Desktop and you should find a file labled ipconfig.txt. Open it and copy and paste its contents in your next reply.

Hope that helps. :)

help

dirtypolo, i rebooted laptop and reseted my router but again i cannot connect on the internet.

Goku, i could connect to the internet on saturday night, then on sunday morning i could not connect to the internet. i tried to connect with my home computer and this was ok. i dont think i need to set up a new connection, i have checked and my wireless network connection is connected (signal strength is excellent). i do not think i made any changes, the last thing i was doing on saturday night was downloading from bittorrent but the file had no seeds or leechers so i deleted the files i wanted to download (dont know if this helps), i tried to go online the next day (sunday morning)and couldnt connect(i know that bittorrent involves ip addresses and we have been working on ip addresses with my problem, could this be a factor?).

basically, i can go online with my home computer, but i cannot go online with my laptop even though my wirless connection is good.

i tried to explain to beeceebee yesterday, there is a little globe which appears on the bottom right of my screen, and when this globe is there i know i am online. this globe is not there and has not been since sunday morning.

i have typed in ipconfig.txt and a lot of information comes up. i cannot get that info to you other than typing it myself i guess i will type it down. here goes

The problem you have is that when you turn your PC on its taking the first IP address normally ending in 1

if you then try and start the lappy it too is also trying to use the first IP address, but it cant as the PC is using it.

There are a few ways around this - the settings in the router need changing.

Leave the PC off and then try and connect with the lappy

Jimmy I really do hope that the advice just given you helps because it is required that I close this thread.

the last thing i was doing on saturday night was downloading from bittorrent but the file had no seeds or leechers so i deleted the files i wanted to download (dont know if this helps)
There exists the real possibility that the p2p download has altered your settings. It seems it worked through Saturday night.

Please review the following.http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/malware-removal-av-firewalls-etc/5533-free-pc-help-p2p-policy.html#post39692

If you need help removing the p2p software and disinfecting your computer please feel free to create a new thread.
