RP1980 Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 Is there an easy way to synchronize files between my laptop and external HDD? My desktop is running Windows XP. The files I specifically want to sycronize is my music, I have Memeo Autobackup software running but that does not update files, it just creates new ones each time something changes. After doing this I would then ideally like to sycronize my laptop with the ext HDD, using the ext HDD as a central drive if you like. Not sure if this is possible though. I have seen software you can buy but I am hoping there is another way round it, or someone knows of some good free software? Thanks! Quote
backtogeek Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 What type of external HDD is it, USB / Network are both computers able to connect to it at the same time e.g. via a hub or network? Depending on your setup it is possible using windows synchronisation, you just need to tweak your registry to have the client side cache pointing at the external HDD If I recall correctly the settings are in HKLM>software>microsoft>windows>netcache Depending on your setup we should be able to take you through this step by step and I will grab the right key from my XP laptop to be sure. If you want to go ahead with it then please descibe your setup / folder locations for sync in as much detail as possible, Then there is the other more simple option of making a share on the extrernal HDD and re-mapping your my documents to the same area on both computers then the changes will be reflected in real time.
