Guest Angel Posted November 7, 2007 Posted November 7, 2007 Hi everyone, I was thinking of installing a second hard drive or getting an external hard drive for the purpose of backing up files. I have 2, 1.1 USB ports. One is occupied by my APC battery backup and the other, I am using a Belkin 4 plug in hub. What is the best way to go? Do I need drives for these options? What do I need for this purpose. I am running Windows 98SE on this machine. TIA Angel

I don't think I'd try the latter approach without first installing a USB 2.0 PCI card. That's what I did (well, actually I have both - a second internal HD and a USB 2.0 external hard drive enclosure with an IDE drive inside of it). A possible caveat: if you go the external hard drive enclosure route (well, at least in my case I found this to be true): I only connect it (to the USB 2.0 PCI card) and turn it ON for backup purposes, and when done, turn it off. If I leave the externrla enclosure drive powered on and reboot the computer, for example, it screws up the boot process (even though I'm pretty sure I tried to disable it in the boot sequence, but I'll have to recheck that).

Way to go! I refer to this backing up as "duplication" I have been extremely pleased with my set up. (peace of mind) Mine started off a while ago when I was getting cheap drives from Playstations, now I use bigger drives as they are cheap. I have an internal D drive which I use to duplicate/back up when concience nags me, and can be done in a flash. I have external hard drive cases as E and F, and are connected by USB 1.1 Apparently my Asus board will not accomodate USB2.0 I have a 98,000 image base and a full duplication of say 20 Gb takes about 3-4 hrs from memory. I leave the cases unscrewed in the external drives and can swap Hard drives at will. I find leaving external dives switched on slows down my system esp in explorer, so I just use them just when necessary. I have used this system for around 3 years, without a glitch and am about to use a similar setup for XP, then I can take advantage of USB2.0 Just my (amateur) experience Rod.

Does that make sense?? That implies a transfer rate of 0.275 GB per minute, or 275 MB per min, or about 4.6 MB per sec (not 20, like yours above). Sounds slower than it should be to me, or maybe it works out slower at the BING level (using a partition copy).

Guest Bill in Co. Posted November 8, 2007 Posted November 8, 2007 Re: Install 2nd HD or External HD And something else I wanted to add here: If I leave the USB external drive connected and powered on and reboot, all hell breaks loose, so to speak. It tries accessing the external USB drive, DESPITE my only having enabled "Floppy", "CD-ROM", and "IDE" in BIOS. I'm using an old Dell Dimension here, circa 2000. Hmmm. Maybe by enabling IDE in BIOS it has to do this?, since the USB external enclosure has an IDE hard drive inside of it? But that doesn't sound right. Bill in Co. wrote: > I don't know. Sorry for the belated response. My brother has been testing my external USB HD enclosure on his XP box using USB 1.1. I don't know which hardware he is using, but he managed to write 4GB of data without problems. I've also confirmed that my enclosure works on an Intel/XP box. However, I still haven't been able to get anything working on either of my DOS/Win98SE/SiS 7001/7002 boxes. The symptoms are the same whether in DOS or Windows, whether I'm connecting with USB 1.1 or 2.0, or whether I'm using the Maximus Decim or Windows/SiS drivers. I've also purchased a second box with a different chipset which also has similar problems, although not exactly the same. This second box works on an Intel/XP machine. My second enclosure also has a firewire interface which doesn't work either. The firewire card in my machine has a non-SiS chipset. So, in short, I've had no success. I'm not even sure whether I have a hardware or a software problem, although the former looks more likely. BTW, I've also tried a different brand of hard drive but the problem remained the same. I've given up for now until such time as I can experiment with an XP/SiS box. Thanks for your interest anyway. - Franc Zabkar -- Please remove one 'i' from my address when replying by email.

Firewire would/should have negated that though, so really, I am curious.... did the modified Firewire driver load? Hmm, wait a minute, your errors were DOS Box related weren't they??? -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.orgfree.com ________

I've just received word from my brother this morning. He confirms that his XP box has a PCChips motherboard with an SiS 7001 controller. So now I'm really confused. :-( At my end I have had no luck with either SiS 7001 or SiS 7002 controllers, in both earlier and later model PCChips and ECS motherboards, whether in real DOS mode, or in a Win98SE DOS window, or from within Explorer. In DOS mode I'm using the abovementioned Panasonic driver, and in Win98SE I'm using the Maximus Decim driver set. FWIW, my two external USB enclosures are based on the JMicron JM20337 "Hi Speed USB to SATA & PATA Combo Bridge" and the Prolific Technology PL-3507 "Hi-speed USB & IEEE1394 combo to IDE bridge controller". - Franc Zabkar -- Please remove one 'i' from my address when replying by email.

Hmm, another wrench thrown into the gearbox... Let's see, had to run through some of those older postings [and previous files you posted]::: seems you had either not properly installed the MD driver OR it had failed to recognize the proper chipset/configuration {though that may have been due, in part, to those BIOS manipulation issues you were working on}. If you remember, you had to re-run one segment. Did you thereafter run through a *complete removal* of the old orangeware and MD driver setup, checking of course for registry residuals, and try a complete reinstall with the newer MD driver? I haven't tested the 3.3 [or 3.2], but I am running the 3.1 at the moment. I presume its safe to believe you have already checked the net for those enclosure chipsets, and any potential issues. How did they *rate*? Were there any 'slap in the face' issues? -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.orgfree.com ________
