Install shared printers on Terminal Server

with so many printing issues developing due to printers that Users have

created on their local PCs, we've decided to disable the Local Resource

Printers and manually create "shared" printers on the Terminal Server so that

we can manage them and ensure that only approved printers are used. How can

I do that?

Hi,

 

Create the printers as local printers on the TS. For example,

if the printer is connected to the network via tcp/ip, create

the printer directly on the TS, choose Create a new port,

Standard TCP/IP Port, enter the ip address, etc.

 

By default every user on the TS will be able to print to the

printer.

 

Another alternative is to purchase a third party universal

printer driver solution. That way you would only have one

printer driver installed on the server and the users could

use any locally attached printer.

If any of the printers you are going to install on the TS is already shared

on a print server, or even if they aren't, make sure you don't list the

printers in AD (the printers installed on the TS). This can cause issues if

other users are able to install printers from the Active Directory listing,

you don't want non-TS users accidentally mapping to the printers hosted on

the Terminal server.

If I disable Local Resources on the users Remote Desktop options, will this

help? Or, if I set the Group Policy Windows Component/erminal Server

settings to disable...?

Since you have more than a few users it makes the

most sense to get a per-server license. The prices below

are old and you may be able to get a better price through

a reseller:

 

Print-IT: $995/server, includes first year support

Screwdrivers: $1495/server + $299 1yr support

 

They really save a lot of time and headaches. If you use

one you can remove all printer drivers from the server

(except the upd one) and disable windows printer

mapping.

 

Windows Server 2008 will have a similar solution called

Terminal Services Easy Print. The down side to it is that

the client software requirements are much stiffer and it

does not have all of the features of the major upd solutions

(although it has the big ones). See here for more info:
