I recently purchaced a blu ray internal drive, I thought it would be a simple job connect it up and install the drivers. However ive connected it up and my computer is recognizing it in device manager and saying it is working properly but the drive cannot find any discs not just dvds i have tried games and audio cd, my computer just freezes up and crashes when i try to open the drive in my computer. I have installed the proper software and updated it on the internet and it is definately plugged in correctly as the blue light comes on and the drive opens and closes so it's not a power issue. I am certain that is not due to my computer not being fast enough as i have more than all the minimum requirements needed. Is the drive faulty or is there something i need to do to my computer settings to make it work?

thanks for your help

Hello Sammy

Welcome to FPCH

Did you install the software before connecting the optical drive which would have been the correct method?

The optical drive is the blu ray drive Sammy and the Cyberlink software will be just for the burning aspect.

Did you get a driver disk with it at all?

Uninstall the drive in Device Manager, reboot and allow Windows to "Find" it again then get back to us on the result.

okay did all that, my computer said installing drivers, then successfully installed, i put an audio cd in and same result, computer went ridiculouly slow then crashed. The only cd i got with it was that so i assumed it had the drivers on it somewhere. its an LG GGC-H20L drive if that helps btw

the problem is that my computer was not just bought, i had it made so i don't kno where to look for firmware.

I have a

Nvidia Geforce 9500 Gt graphics card

AMD Athlon 64x Dual Core Proccessor

and a Gigabyte S series nforce 560/520 motherboard

from what i have got off device manager so don't know if that helps.

Thanks very much for your help i appreciate it

ok just did that it came up with an error message saying my computer does not meet the minimum requirements so the update has been cancelled.

Im assuming that's because it's not a HP computer that right?

okay this may just be me bein thick but can i just check, in the readme it says

Not following the subsequent update instructions explicitly will result in

permanent damage to your drive, for which LG will not be responsible so i kinda wanna get it right,

Connect the drive as¡°master¡±by it self, on the secondary IDE controller

with no other device on the same IDE cable, making note to set the jumper

on the back of the drive to the¡°master¡±position

What jumper is it talking about there was nothing on the bak of the drive and what is an IDE controller?

This is an image of the jumper on the back on a drive.

I will let someone else explain how to connect it up as IDE drives are not something I know much about

It says in the read me of that one This firmware software only works in windows mode with Windows 98/ME/2000/XP. I have vista 64bit. should i still use it?

I installed the driver from the other one. All the connections were in right, it's a sata connection thought so I have no idea what all that about jumpers was. anyway it said that the drivers were already up to date so

Right - its SATA so forget about all the jumpers as ALL SATA drives are MASTER.

When you plugged the drive in and started windows - did it say that it was installing device in the bottom right in a bubble?

We need to start from the beginning as you are going nowhere fast, with Vista the drive should work 'out of the box'

Beeceebee's post number 11 links to the LG site, and v 1.03 Firmware is available there - Vista is stated as one of the O/S's.

The readme file says this

This firmware update is for use only on PCs with Windows Vista, Windows XP.

It is safe to run the update, however if you are still concerned, the best bet is to email LG tech support and ask for guidance.

The other side to this problem is the chipset drivers. I've had a look at the S series boards and can't find one with the 560/520 nforce chipset.

Can you find the exact board model? If you can, we can pull up a link to the latest board drivers.

yeah when i installed the drive vista came up in the bottom corner saying installing drivers, then it said installation complete your device is ready to use, or something along those lines anyway. The computer can find the drive and it's coming up in 'my computer' the problems arise when i put a disc in.

I tested the drive on my brothers computer and it bloody worked first time so the drive's definately not faulty. my brother has vista 32xbit so could it have something to do with that?

my motherboard is Gigabyte S-series GA-M56S-S3.

Ok princess but the link referred to is for firmware not drivers. You have not said that you have tried the link in my post. Tootech indicated that the direct download will not work for you but the link I supplied should. Please make sure that is done.

After some considerable reasearch, and a chat with LG over the Internet, here is the story so far...

LG say your drive is 64 bit compatible.

Microsoft cannot say your drive is 64 bit Vista compatible - see link

https://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/Details.aspx?type=Hardware&p=Super%20Multi%20Blue%20BD%20Rewriter&v=LG%20ELECTRONICS&uid=GGC-H20L&pf=4&pi=1&c=Storage%20Devices&sc=CD%2FRW%20%2F%20DVD%2FRW&os=32-bit

LG say that there have been some problems with your drive and nForce chipsets, but do not have any data on the nForce 560 chipset.

They suggest trying a BIOS update, and a chipset update.

Let us know if you want to try the updates.

Erm - I would not recommend this just for a drive.

return it to LG for a refund

Is the bios thingy complicated cos i really won't know what im doing so i don't want to risk ruining my computer. But would be willing if you could show me step by step in complete laymans terms :P

Right i installed that link you gave me but still no success. I had my computer built for me, i didn't build it but it wasn't shop bought. and it is IDE i think. I went on device manager and it says IDE channel four times.
