Hi

 

My laptop crashed recently so I have given it to a friend of a friend along with the backup discs which i made when i got the laptop. he told me that I have lost everything on my system and that he has to do a system restore. He said he needs the windows disc I got when I bought the laptop. The problem is that windows was already on the laptop when i bought it and i dont have a disc. now he says i need to buy a new windows disc. Is this the case? or is there some way of fixing this problem without having to buy a new windows?

With all due respect we can't advise you on a fix because you haven't told us anything except that it crashed.

 

What are the details of the "crash"?

What is the make, model and number of the laptop?

Were the disks really backup disks?

Could they have been Recovery disks instead?

 

Why does your friend say he needs to do a System Restore? This is not the same as a recovery to factory defaults. A system Restore can be done from the Recovery Console.

hi

 

its an acer aspire 3630. one day i was on the laptop and it just restarted by itself. after the first acer screen it went to a black screen with a flashing cursor in the top left hand corner.

 

This guy had a look at it and he said everything was fine i.e hardrive and that he just needed to do a system restore. I gave him the recovery discs which i had made when i got the laptop. He said he will need my windows disc aswell but i never had one because windows xp was already on the laptop when i bought it.

If your hard drive is functioning ok, press Alt + F10 when your PC boots - it takes you through a recovery process, and sets your system back to factory standard.

 

The Recovery disks you made will do the same job, but the best way is Alt + F10.

 

If you have data stored on your hard drive, and you want to recover it, don't restore your PC just yet. Have someone that knows what they are doing have a look at it - they will probably be able to take out the drive, connect it to another machine and retrieve most of your data.

 

If everything failed, your hard disk has gone faulty and your recovery CD's won't work you would be best advised to get hold of Acer and order a new recovery CD/DVD set.
