Burning DVDs for viewing on television screen

I dithered about putting this here or in the CD/DVD section but ...

 

If one wants to create a slide-show with music, can it be burned onto a normal DVD the usual way - and then be used the same as a purchased DVD movie, for example, to view on the television screen? Or perhaps that's a totally different technology all together?

Yes you can. I know this because I've got one just like it all the way from Australia :) but I believe that you need a Video Authoring Application like Nero or NCH, maybe some one here can recommend the best one for you as I Haven't tried to do this yet myself. but saying that I just had a quick look at the Nero 9 trial version and that looks pretty easy.

Match... you are correct... a DVD authoring program is needed. I make slideshows all the time. I have used Nero in the past... and am not too fond of it. Currently I use Sonic. I find it much easier to use and easier on my pc than the Nero. But my desktop is ancient. A good game of minesweeper can bog my computer down :p j/k

i use dvd santa. installs in seconds,simple to use and does'nt take over your computer such as nero. funny this topic came up 2day because today was my son's "student of the week" day and my wife and i made a dvd slide show for him to take to show the class.

I always use NERO for DATA and music disks,

It is the best software IMHO as it has basic and advanced settings.

nero is much more equipped than santa. with santa u won't be able to do images,data disc or music. it also does'nt convert from dvd to avi. just thought i'd put that out there.

Thanks for all the suggestions on what to use ... I do want both photos plus music when making this slide show (it's for a 12 year old's upcoming birthday ...from birth through all the stages of his 'long' life - and nope, I promise no naked baby on a fur rug picture to embarrass him).

Because although I could download either 'Nero' or 'Santa' to do this, I've found the below assorted programs that came pre-loaded with this computer (and yet, woe to me when trying to figure out what each of them is meant to do as I've rummaged through every built-in 'help' section I can find and am truly feeling like a duffus here - gentle sigh).

 

The ones available within this computer are:

 

DV Gate plus

Intervideo DVD

VAIO Medio Center

Windows Movie Maker

somewhat correct. the software that does the conversion may not play in all dvd players. the one i made played in only 4 of 5 players i have here to test it out. luckily it played at school. and of course if the dvd player only plays dvd/dvd-r it won't play dvd+r. no matter what u burn it with.

 

btw the student of the week thing turned out very well. the teacher said we were the first to bring in a presentation like that. it was 5 minutes long to the tune of boston's "more than a feeling" with random effects. if i remember u go into settings or options and u pick the mp3 file than set it to synchronize with the length of the song.

DVD+R is meant to be better for compatibility, I only use DVD-R and never had an issue with compatibility

I've got DVD+R written down on my list - just in case I hit a compatibility issue with the DVD-R ... and to be honest, I never even knew there was different types before getting all the help here.

 

Because of all those 'odd' programs I found within my computer, I'll buy extra discs and give each one a try ... and if none are meant to write a slide show with music, I'll download both the Nero and Santa trial programs.

I can only imagine how much fun both your son and the other children had watching the slide show set to 'More than a feeling', stain - wonderful! And what a relief to read that one can actually set a mp3 file to synchronize with the length of the slide show - yipee!

Mara... I've used movie maker to assemble slideshows and add music tracks. However... movie maker will not burn the slideshow onto a DVD for playback on a DVD player. That's where you'll need authoring software such as Nero.

 

If you decide to use movie maker to assemble the slideshow... and need help... I'd be happy to walk you through a few steps to make it easier.
