Guest Alasdair Campbell Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 Hi, I've been evaluating a copy of Windows Server 2003 Enterprise R2. I've since been allocated a product key for Server 2003 Enterprise R1 under the e-academy network. However I am unable to perform a repair install / upgrade as I would be upgrading to a previous version. So my other option is to do a clean install and restore my backed up settings, however I'm unsure as what to backup, and what to leave out. IE If I did a full backup and then tried to restore over the R1 install, I would be installing R2 software and probably the same time restriction. I would just like to backup all the settings for my domain - users, groups, dns, dhcp , wins etc. Is this possible? best, Alasdair
Guest Jabez Gan [MVP] Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 RE: Migrate from Server 2003 R2 to R1 Setup another AD (secondary active directory - use a evaluation copy if you want) and install DHCP /DNS/WINS etc. Configure it as a secondary service for the services. Now, make the secondary server to the primary AD and demote the old server (R2 in your case). Lastly remove the server. Install Win2003 Enterprise on the R2 machine and do the same step above. -- Jabez Gan [MVP] http://www.blizhosting.com http://www.msblog.org "Alasdair Campbell" wrote: > Hi, > I've been evaluating a copy of Windows Server 2003 Enterprise R2. > I've since been allocated a product key for Server 2003 Enterprise R1 under > the e-academy network. > > However I am unable to perform a repair install / upgrade as I would be > upgrading to a previous version. > > So my other option is to do a clean install and restore my backed up > settings, however I'm unsure as what to backup, and what to leave out. > > IE If I did a full backup and then tried to restore over the R1 install, I > would be installing R2 software and probably the same time restriction. > > I would just like to backup all the settings for my domain - users, groups, > dns, dhcp , wins etc. > > Is this possible? > > best, > Alasdair
Guest Alasdair Campbell Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 RE: Migrate from Server 2003 R2 to R1 Hi, Unfortunately that approach is impossible as I only have one machine available. Although the R1 disc would not upgrade from running setup in win32 mode, running the upgrade from the boot disc has seemed to have done the trick. Winver does not report evaluation copy any more and there is no message upon logging in to the same effect. Could I really have avoided the lengthy process you describe? best, Alasdair

A reinstallation using the Win2003 RTM ("R1") will leave some R2 files on your system, which could potentially "confuse" your system in the future as you install software - low probability but possible. :) -- Jabez Gan Microsoft MVP: Windows Server - File Storage "Alasdair Campbell" <AlasdairCampbell@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:3E982D96-5AED-4044-B96A-D6BC6B81A1B8@microsoft.com... > Hi, > > Unfortunately that approach is impossible as I only have one machine > available. > > Although the R1 disc would not upgrade from running setup in win32 mode, > running the upgrade from the boot disc has seemed to have done the trick. > > Winver does not report evaluation copy any more and there is no message > upon > logging in to the same effect. > > Could I really have avoided the lengthy process you describe? > best, > Alasdair
Guest Alasdair Campbell Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 Re: Migrate from Server 2003 R2 to R1 Jabez, I'll bear that in mind, certainly. I think in the next couple of months the charity will be looking to upgrade it's server hardware - at that point I can install server2003 and then promote the new server to DC. Thanks for the help
