PC4Dummies Posted February 6, 2009 Author Posted February 6, 2009 Where did you get these discs PC and what files did you copy and from where? downloaded from microsoft 6 X floppy setup disks...as the cd/rom wont auto read on start up Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Those are XP boot floppies and do not include the operating system. Do you actually have an XP cd and if so what does it say on it? Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 You have changed the boot order in the bios to boot from the cdrom drive yes? Quote
PC4Dummies Posted February 6, 2009 Author Posted February 6, 2009 yes but not sure i did it right...would you be so kind to tell me what order Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Ok on boot up press F2 or Del to get into the bios. Look for Boot options which may be listed under Advanced. http://slackworld.berlios.de/2007/images_vmware/vm-bios-cdrom-boot.png Alter the boot order to CDROM first, insert the xp disk and Save the changes usually by pressing F10. The system will re-start and ask you to Press any key to boot from CD, do this only that first time as it will ask again later in the install, PRESS NOTHING. Quote
PC4Dummies Posted February 6, 2009 Author Posted February 6, 2009 message now says windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt <windows root>\system32\hal.dll. please re-install a copy of the above Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 This sounds like you are trying to boot from a previously installed operating system that has missing files. Did you follow my previous instructions? Quote
PC4Dummies Posted February 6, 2009 Author Posted February 6, 2009 yes to the letter...sorry for being a pain Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Ok can you tell me EXACTLY what it says on that XP disk you have please. Quote

Guest Wolfeymole Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Go here and scroll down to "Steps to Clean Install XP" XP Clean Install Note the screen shots on the left and get back to us if you encounter errors. If you do then look here. Error message: "Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem" Quote
PC4Dummies Posted February 6, 2009 Author Posted February 6, 2009 get as far as disk no4 then following msg the file lbrtfdc.sys is corrupted press any key to continue Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Disk No 4? Why are you trying to load from the floppy disks when the XP cdrom contains all the boot files that you need. Forget about the floppy disks and follow the instruction in post number 9. Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 PC4 I specifically requested that you change the boot order to cdrom in the bios, it seems you have totally ignored that, now unless you follow the instruction offered then I cannot see how we can help you, much as we'd like to. Quote
PC4Dummies Posted February 6, 2009 Author Posted February 6, 2009 i changed the boot order just as you said i then followed both ways of a clean instal with cd then with disks...still nothing on cd load it comes up with press f1 to retry reboot, f2 for setup utility Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 It sounds to me like you did NOT SAVE the boot change before exiting the bios. I'll say this once more ok that you need to put those 6 floppy disks to one side and forget about them. Ok on boot up press F2 or Del to get into the bios. Look for Boot options which may be listed under Advanced. http://slackworld.berlios.de/2007/im...cdrom-boot.png Alter the boot order to CDROM first, insert the xp disk and Save the changes usually by pressing F10. The system will re-start and ask you to Press any key to boot from CD, do this only that first time as it will ask again later in the install, PRESS NOTHING. Quote
PC4Dummies Posted February 6, 2009 Author Posted February 6, 2009 pressed f2....i mayed doulbe sure the boot sequence is as follows 1 ide cd-rom 2 diskette drive 3 hard-disk drive c: Saved changes on exit=yes the system then comes up with strike f1 to try reboot, f2 for setup utility Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 And you made sure the XP disk was in the drive before saving the changes and exiting? Quote
PC4Dummies Posted February 6, 2009 Author Posted February 6, 2009 yes now i have noticed that the cd is trying to do something and a msg comes up invalid BOOT.INI file Booting from C:\windows\ Quote
