Guest Capt K Ripendran Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 On my Win 98 SE, I had installed the above Anti-Virus. I had NOT used this PC for about 27 days during travel. When I started,, I expected the automatic undates to be launched. Regrettably, the machine is NOT updating and when I tried to remove it from the Add/Remove Programs so as to reinstall it, I am NOT able to do so! What could be the problem & what is the solution? Thanking you Capt K Ripendran

Guest lb Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 Re: AVG Ani-Virus Free Edition I agree, reinstall it. You may find that this will fix the issue. There is nothing wrong with AVG anti virus. I usually just manually check for updates as they have them almost everyday and I do not like having things running on timers in the background. If you are still unhappy, you shoulkd now be able to uninstall the AVG as the uninstall string should have been repaired by the reinstall. There is always a way to remove them. I use AVG, it works fine for me. I DO NOT have it installed to load on startup though. I dont need or want a virus checker running all the time, which sucks up memory and slows down the computer. I do manual checks weekly or more often if I suspect something. However, if you really want to remove it, you must first open AVG and change the settings to NOT begin at bootup. (You can not remove a running program from 98 or any other ver of windows). Once it's unloaded, reboot, then use the uninstaller. It should be removed. The other option is to just boot to Dos mode. Go to the program's directory and either delete all the files, or just rename all .EXE files to .E## or any other name. I prefer the rename method since I can go back in case there is a big problem. If it loaded at srtartup, expect error messages upon booting. Thats why it's better to disable all startup issues first. All programs can be removed, and thats why I prefer Win98 over XP. XP will crash or go bonkers on you if you "force" removal of something from Dos mode, or whatever. Win98 was the last ver of Windows where the user still had control of things, and is why I will never upgrade. Once my computer starts controlling me, it goes out the door....
Guest Dan Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 Re: AVG Ani-Virus Free Edition I agree. I like that you can easily uninstall and reinstall programs with Windows 98 Second Edition. I think it will continue to be my favorite Microsoft operating system for a long time. It still puzzles me why Microsoft would remove the 9x consumer source code from the market and not use it anymore. I know about the economics factor and not wanting to support 2 lines of source code but if Microsoft could properly market it for consumers with older DOS games and for the educational market that still uses 98 Second Edition for older educational programs then I think Microsoft could have a real money maker in the future.
