I'm debating replacing my partners PC for Christmas 09, with a duel core spec machine and hence forth would be looking at running Vista on it, I was just wondering if I could get away with using my copy of Vista as both PC's, they will be connected to the internet through the same router, or if I use the same key on both machines the second would be rejected? can anyone clarify the legality's of the licencing on Vista?

It is really quite simple, unless you have a bulk license Microsoft's EULA will not allow multiple installations from the same disc.

Even if you were to try it anyway you would fail as it would recognise the different computer.

Thanks that's what I was expecting but as you can appreciate starting to save the pennies now it works out quite cheap :) and its not a problem I want to have to solve Christmas morning :)

Unless you are building it there is not that big a difference anyway.

lost me difference in what?

I will probably help her to build it, looks a lot better for the present count if I wrap all the components separately. :)

What type of vista disk do you have match?

If it's OEM it definitely won't work on any other box.

If it's a proper full version it will work but when you try validate to Microsoft they will tell you to bollocks.

That's it in a nutshell.

Mines a Proper full version, but I've been looking at the Microsoft site trying to find the info on licensing, and after page after page link after link trying to sell me another full copy I've found out, at least I think that I can upgrade the licence on my disk for half the price of a full copy.

Match, I'm afraid there's no debate on this. 1 licence key for 1 PC build.....end of.

Install on second PC, attempt to activate and......it will most probably fail activation.

Check out the price of Vista OEM before purchasing an extra licence - OEM may be cheaper

Here's a current price...

Thanks Tootech, Just a bit of a new situation for me as when you buy a new machine from a shop it comes with OS and licence, when you build it you have to sort this out for yourself, this will be the first time that I have had two home built machines, and while I was working out how many penny's I need to save up. I thought do I really need to pay for another OS, and the answer is yes if you want to connect to the internet.

Thanks for the link it may be really useful, but now I have a dilemma on when Windows 7 is going to be released
