Hi

Hoping someone can help - I've got under 5mb space left on a 11gb hard disk! and constantly get low disk messages.

I know 11gb isn't a lot of memory these days, but I definitely haven't got 11gb worth of programs/applications/photos/music saved on my hard disk - and when ever I delete a large program/application to make space on the hard disk, it is mysteriously taken up very quickly.

I've run various anti virus programs (SupeAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, Norton, Window Defender) which have found various viruses and zapped them, but the problem still exists.

I have to do a disk clean-up daily - What else can I do to find all this missing hard disk space?

  • Download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune.
  • Save the file to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on the file to run the program.
  • On the Main tab, check the Select All button.
  • Press the Empty Selected button.
  • Next, click on the Firefox tab (if active) and check the Select All button.
  • Press the Empty Selected button.

Note: If you would like to preserve your saved passwords in Firefox, then click No at the corresponding prompt.

  • Now, click on the Opera tab (if active) and check the Select All button.
  • Press the Empty Selected button.

Note: If you would like to preserve your saved passwords in Opera, then click No at the corresponding prompt.

  • Click on the Exit button to quit the program.

It might be that your hard drive space is actually getting full. I have a 18GB hard drive myself and it got full surprisingly fast. If that doesn't help, then we will need to dig deeper to identify the cause of the problem.

Hope that helps. :)

Hi

I've done the above which has freed 90mb :) but there still is a problem with the disappearing hard disk space - so I would like to "dig deeper" but need guidance in doing so....

Double click My Computer then right click on C: and choose Explore.

Right click on the following folders and choose Properties

Documents and Settings

Program Files

Windows

Calculate the amount of megabytes in each folder and you will then see what's taking up so much room.

I've seem to have lost all the 90mb within the last half hour without saving any files:confused:

Please follow the instructions in my previous post and get back to us.

I've just calculated the folders suggested and it comes to 8GB.

I've looked in the Programs (4.16gb) and Windows (3.50gb) folders and do no recognise several files.

Someone once told me it could be Norton AV and Systemworks eatting up the hard drive.

So am thinking of deleting it and replacing with AVG or something similiar....

OK, please download and install WinPatrol from here. It will actively monitor any ongoing changes and will notify you about it hopefully identifying the culprit. :)

Please tell us a bit more about your computer specifications and your general computing and surfing habits.

  • Start HijackThis.
  • Click on the Open The Misc Tool Section button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Post that here.

Bingo! Here you go.

Don't replace it with AVG though. You will hardly be any better off with it. Try something more resistant and resource efficient such as Avira AntiVir. Also, once you have obtained it, run a full system scan with it and see what it finds.

Hope that helps. :)

LimeWire needs to to be dumped.

Java is totally out of date, more here.

Download Free Java Software - Sun Microsystems

Norton does you no favours.

We will look deeper.

That is too much for an 11 GB Hard Drive. No wonder, you are unable to free up some disk space. There is one more offending entry in your Add / Remove list that needs urgent attention.

Viewpoint Media Player (Remove Only)

Viewpoint is considered as foistware and often comes bundled with software such as AOL and AIM. It is therefore installed without the user's consent and has the notorious ability to collect information about the user's habits. It is entirely your call if you choose to uninstall the software or not but if I were you, I wouldn't hesitate to remove the software immediately.

There are many other things I would remove but it depends on what you use and what you don't. However, you have plenty of things that do the same tasks. It might be wise to remove one of them so that you can gain some disk space.

I have to go at the moment but I will be back with some further suggestions.

So what does your free disk space indicate now Star?

I'm surmising you have a 10Gb drive rather than an 11Gb and given that Windows reports hard drive sizes below what they actually are then that looks about right to me.

Obtain a larger drive mate.

OK, here are some more entries to remove. I have to run again for now so remove them and see how much disk space you can recover.

WinZip - Does the same things as WinRAR but WinRAR is more efficient and flexible. If you have got the paid version for WinRAR, then I recommend you to keep it. If you haven't, then keep the free version of WinZip instead.

ZoneAlarm, ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker - Very unnecessary seeing you have the Avira Premium Suite installed.

I will get back to you as soon as possible. Hope that helps. :)

Does Windows actually say it is an 11GB Harddrive?

Have you opened My Computer, right clicked on your C Drive and check properties for what it says you have for Used space and Free Space?

If not please do that now and let us know.

OK, I am back. Time for some more troubleshooting. :D

Adobe Acrobat 5.0 - Outdated and a resource hog. Use Foxit Reader instead.

AMR Converter, dBpowerAMP Music Converter - Both appear to be some kind of file converter. Uninstall either of them, or better both. Instead, rely on online converters as much as you can. Your choice whether to follow or ignore this.

Informations about your PC - Very weird. Recommended to uninstall immediately unless you know what it is and trust it.

Launch Manager v1.1.8 - Unnecessary. You can use the in-built Windows Scheduler instead.

There are plenty others that you can remove but I am tired of listing them so I think you will be able to find your way around. If you are stuck anywhere, just ask. :)

By the way, I notice that most programs you have installed are trialware or sharewares. I would recommend you to uninstall those as soon as their trial expires as they would otherwise consume the valuable and already limited resources on your system. Do not do so if you have paid subscriptions for all of them though I don't fancy you doing that.

Hope that helps. :)
