styler Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Hi I am running XP Prof and have a problem booting. When i try to boot it goes straight the black screen asking which mode i want to boot in (safe mode, normal mode etc) when i try any of these it goes to the xp logo page for a couple of seconds, then just stops and trys to reboot which means it just goes back to the black, pick a boot mode page. I have tried to change the bios settings so it reboots from the DVD drive first, and have put the XP disc in, but makes no difference - same thing happens. Any help will be much appreciated Quote

SvelteHosting Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 When you go back into the BIOS does it now say it is going to boot from the CD/DVD or has it reverted to the previous settings? If it says it is going to boot from the CD and you can hear the CD spinning up when it boots then I'd try a different XP CD or test the XP CD in another drive. Quote

styler Posted February 9, 2009 Author Posted February 9, 2009 No Hardware or software changes. I did move the desktop box around but didn't bang it or anything. before this happened i got the blue checkdisc screen which i let go through the process and then it worked fine. then when i tried to reboot the next day. it would only let me get as far as i mentioned above. very frustrating:confused: Quote

backtogeek Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Try booting into safe mode with command prompt that's usually the most likely to work and one that people usually don't bother trying, if it boots into that then from the command prompt window that opens type 'notepad' that should then open notepad, from notepad go to > file > open > a file explorer window will open then go to c:\windows\system32 and find explorer.exe > right click on explorer.exe and it should give you a run or open option which will then force windows into a safe mode after a few 'are you sure' type messages. once it has loaded (I know its a case of 'if' it loads at this stage) you should be able to do a system restore or alternatively uninstall and very recent security updates from add / remove programs, then open a command prompt and run chkdsk c: /f Quote

Platti Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 Hi, I have the same problem except it just locks on the blank screen. Tried going through the list of this listed in the last thread but there is no explorer.exe in that directory. Need my PC working urgently as meant to be studying for an exam, any more ideas ? I've tried a system restore from a few days ago but thats made no difference. Thanks Quote
