Well a few full stops in that post might not have come amiss Daddy.

So the drives not showing in Device Manager but is in the bios?

Just because it's showing in the bios means that it is physically connected only.

If you cannot open it by using Eject or pressing the drive button I suggest the drive is shot.

Does it show in Disk Management at all?

Not in disk management at all it. should have listing for a cd or dvd rom drive, but not a cd or dvd rom in the list. I'm surprised if burnt out, as this is my wife's laptop & she rearly use the disc drive, as she mostly use laptop for the net, so the last time i used it it was working, but have had updates from microsoft, now light on but not working to restore windows. I just do not want to get another if it was something else so thought i would ask. I was thinking if a external cd or dvd driver fitted through usb could reintall windows. But do not want to waste money.

There are quite a few various models of that laptop available.

Did you do anything at all before it stopped working as a light being on, even stuck on means that the drive is trying to do something.

Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)

Asus P5K premium black pearl

4GB OCZ Reaper 8500

260GTX

I was just turning laptop on, & just saw this orange light on the side wondered what it was, then found out it was the dvd driver light on so i thought someone left disc inside, but would not open the tray pushing the button, so shut down got tray opened then boom light stuck on again.

Do you have a small hole in the drive door? If so obtain a paper clip, bend it straight and insert that to pop the drive open manually.

Load a disk and tell us what happens.

It sounds to me like the drive mechanics or the lens are done for, can you eject the disk either via windows or in the normal manner at all with that disk in?
