I have another laptop(Dell), which powers up and the fan seems to run continuously, but absolutely nothing appears on the screen.

Is this lappy ready for the knackers yard or can it be revived?

First and easiest thing to try is to shine a bright light at the screen, maybe off at an angle, and see if you see something faint. If you do then the LCD backlight is out. Next is to try an external monitor. Usually one of the function keys switches the external monitor modes. Check your documentation to see how to switch between the LCD and external modes.

Hi macaroon, Good advice so far, especially from poconos, do try an external display, but please give us some details of make and model and operating system on it etc. Also how many lights light up on the front, what each is for, and how they behave, for example, if there is one for the HDD, it should be flickering on and off, not full brightness continuously.
