My screen locked last night forcing me to reboot which has now caused a problem. Every time I reboot it firstly open a screen asking if I want to open in safe mode - safe mode, networking etc. On leaving it to open in the normal format it just goes to a blank screen and locks (left it all night in that state, no change)

I can open in in safe mode (but thats no use for me).

I have tried doing a restore to a couple of days ago but it just locked again.

Need the PC running ASAP as studying for an exam and the work is all on there - got to be worth a beer or 2 if I can get it running

Thanks.

You may want to try the "last good configuration" option as an alternative to safe mode.

That being said, there is another possibility that needs to be explored. I can't help noticing both your profile name and your email address. It indicates some possible interaction with Platte Media.

From what I understand, under certain circumstances Platte can disable your PC for extended periods of time "by agreement." Is there any possibility that this may be the cause of your problems?

Another check to do......run a full disk check - it will repair any errors in the filesystem and indexes.

Boot into Safe Mode, navigate to My Computer. Right click on C: drive, then down to Properties - click it.

Then when the box comes up, go to Tools and you will see Error Checking.

Click Check Now

Another box comes up, put ticks in both of the options, and click Start.

A warning message will come up telling you that the disk cannot be checked now, do you want it checking on reboot - click Yes.

Close all of the other boxes and restart your computer.

Leave it as it will run a full disk check - it may take an hour or so, and hopefully when it is complete your system will start up ok.

Never heard of platte media so no link there, have used this username & email for ever so think thats unlikely.

I'll try the disk check and see what happens.......

Running the check. SHould I be on a blue screen that states :

Checking file system on C:

The type of the file system is NTFS

The volume is clean

windows has finished checking the disk.

...

this came up moments after i started it then froze. Is it working some wizardry in the background or has it locked ?

It should take a while, and certainly not lock up after it has finished.

It should have looked something like this

If it didn't do that, and you have tried Last Known Good Config, there may be an issue with your disk.

Have tried last known good config and it still locks as well.

What do you mean by the following:

On leaving it to open in the normal format it just goes to a blank screen and locks (left it all night in that state, no change)

Please elabortate on it as it could provide some vital information in troubleshooting your computer. :)

Boot into safe mode without networking....

Click Start.... my computer..... right click C: drive ...... properties ...... click on the tools tab.... in the error checking box click on "check now" ..... put a tick in both boxes.... click start.

This should allow your computer to run the disk check since it wouldn't run in regular mode.

When I turn the computer on it firstly shows the windows logo with the bar moving underneath as it normally does when booting up then the screen goes blank (all black) and freezes at this point.

Stop the press......i disconnected my external hard drive and re booted and its running a scan on the c drive. I presume this is totally unconnected, I only disconnected it to move some files on my laptop.

Fingers crossed .......

No. It did the check fine then rebooted itself then went back to the above screen and is now locked again.:confused::confused:

No nothing that I can think off. I've took it into a shop now to get fixed as was in a hurry. I'll ask what the problem was and let you know.

OK its fixed. This has however opened up a whole load new problems due to them having just wiped it and started again.

I'll start a new thread. I did ask what the problem was but I was just told 'you can spend hours diagnosing, sometimes its just easier to start again.

Thanks to all of those ** came up with solutions for me to try.
