Hi,

I have a problem on my main computer, the mouse will not work, it's a USB infra red. I tried another mouse on it last night, that was loaded ok but even that would not work.

As I do not know how to use the keyboard to get me into control panel and see where the problem is I seem to be stuck. Any help would be appreciated.:)

Have you tried a simple basic wired mouse? If that does not work use the microsoft key to open start and then navigate using the arrow keys. It is easier to do in a classic menu but with a little practice you should get the hang of it. Edited by BeeCeeBee

As Barry has said the problem with USB mice is that they do not work until the Operating system is loaded and even then, drivers are needed for the Operating system to even make it work.

Get a wired mouse as a back up they are literally £2-£3.

Make sure that it has a PS2 lead and NOT a USB mouse with a PS2 adapter as that will not work.

Hope this helps

I had thought about it but I don't have one, well not one that works properly. I have to go out shortly but will nip into a shop and purchase one and see what happens then. Thanks

Hi do you have a windows key on your keyboard, if so press it and it should open the start menu, then use the arrow keys to move the highlighted box over the control panel and press return.

Then press the tab key and you should get a box over the options in the menu. again usse the arrow keys to navigate to hardware and sound and press return

Again press the tab key and use the arrow keys to navigate to device manager press return

When the windows needs your permission to continue box appears use the arrow keys to highlight continue and press return

now you should have a list of what's in your computer press tab and you should get a blue highlighted box at the top use the up and down keys to navigate to mice and other pointing devices (if you have a yellow symbol here let us know)

Match is correct in that I neglected to mention the use of the tab key once you get into a box in the control panel. That being said, a wired mouse should do the trick.

Thanks for all the advice folks! I now have a wired PS2 mouse and that seems to work fine. So now comes the part to find out why the USB ones stopped working, do I need to put in some new drivers? Or is it best to stick with the PS2 one?

Try uninstalling the mouse software and reinstalling it if you have the disk. If that does not work you can try to uninstall and then reboot with the mouse attached and see if windows recognises it.

Of course the thing may just be broken.

do I need to put in some new drivers?

that depends on

do you want your usb Mice working and on what it says in the device manager, about the drivers for your usb mice, if you follow my last post it will get you there and could you please let us know the makes and model of your mice or chosen usb mouse

With all due respect, we are talking about a mouse here. Windows has enough generic drivers to choke a horse. If the mouse is not broken it should be found even without the software. If you have included software, so much the better.

I agree that the process suggested will help divulge the existence of a driver issue, but, again, this is a mouse and not a sophisticated piece of kit. I suggest keeping it simple.

Hi Match, I have just put the usb mouse back in and it wouldn't work but it did not show anything up in Device manager, certainly no yellow signs at all. So I moved the mouse to another USB port and that one works fine.

I have an Acer T180 D97Z and on the front panel there are three usb ports, two side by side with the printer attached to one, that works as I have just tested the printer but the other one seems to not be working. There is also one other port on it's own and that too is working fine.

OK so you have 3 USB ports 2 of which work and 1 don't, and the reason that your mouse wasn't working was it was plugged into the usb port that don't work.

If thats the case I think that I have done all I can for you :) if you would like to know why you have a none working usb port I'll give some one a shout for you.
