What happens to temporary licenses.

I installed Windows 2003 and activated terminal services in

application mode. I am still within the intial 90 days. I have

installed 10 TS Cals on it. When Iog on to TS, I get a messages that

says by temporary license will expire in 7 days. Since I have added 10

CALs, do I have to do anything when the temporary license expires.

Will I be issued a permanent license at that time?

added the licences the tempory status stopped prompting....you put the

correct one's in? i.e. per user licence in the right section? as far

as any other activation went, there wasn't anything...

I'll look into it again, and see what I can find out/remember....

No, something is wrong, otherwise you would have been issued a

permanent license on the first connection after you installed the TS

CALs.

Which type of TS CALs did you install, Per User or Per Device? Have

you checked that the licensing mode of the Terminal Server matches

the type of TS CALs?

Sounds like you installed Per User TS CALs and forgot to switch the

default licensing mode of the TS. That's done in Terminal Services

Configuration - Server settings.

Re: What happens to temporary licenses.

You are right. The Licensing server is licensing on a per device mode.

the CALs that I installed are on a per user mode. Can my user CALs be

changed into device CAL's? or Do I need to get entirely difference

CALs?

If I need the change the licensing mode of the Licensing server, how

do I do that?

Re: What happens to temporary licenses.

I went to ts conf and changed license mode to user. I restarted the

client and relogged on to the TS. When I look under TS licensing, it

still has 10 user cals total and 10 user cals avail. It does not look

like it issued a user cal to me and is still using a device cal.

Re: What happens to temporary licenses.

First of all, decide what is the cheapest licensing type for your

company:

* if you have more users than clients (like in a classroom or

multiple shift situation, where several people connect to the TS

from shared workstations), then Per Device licensing is cheaper.

* if you have more clients than users (users connect from multiple

clients, i.e their office PC, a laptop and their home PC), then Per

User licensing is cheaper.

If you want to keep your Per User TS CALs, you can simply change

the licensing mode of the TS. As I wrote, that's done in Terminal

Services Configuration - Server settings.

If you want to change to Per Device licensing, you need a

completely different Client License Pack. You'll have to phone the

Clearinghouse, which can issue you a new License Pack. Note that

this is only allowed if you have bought Software Assurance for your

existing TS CALs.

291795 - HOW TO: Locate a Phone Number for the Microsoft

Clearinghouse

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=291795

From

Windows Server 2003 Pricing and Licensing FAQ

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/howtobuy/licensing/pricl

icfaq.mspx#E3DAC

Q. Will I be allowed to switch between Windows Device CALs and

Windows User CALs? What about TS CALs?

A. Customers who have active Software Assurance coverage for

Windows Server CALs under agreements signed on or before April 1,

2003 may change their Windows Device CALs to Windows User CALs at

the time of the annual true-up process. These transition rights can

also be applied in the same way for switching from TS Device CALs

to TS User CALs for TS CALs covered by SA under agreements signed

on or before April 1, 2003.

Customers with current Software Assurance for CALs acquired after

April 1, 2003 may switch their Device CALs to User CALs and User

CAL to Device CALs upon renewal of their Software Assurance

coverage for those CALs.

Re: What happens to temporary licenses.

Per User TS CALs are currently unmanaged. That's why they are

listed as "N/A" under the "Issued" count in TS Licensing Manager.

This means that when a TS server is set to accept User CALs it will

look to the license server to make sure that one is available but

it will not be decremented from the database.

It is your responsibility to have a valid User CAL for every user

that uses the terminal server.

Check this article as well, it explains that even after you have

switched licensing mode on the TS, your User CALs count will not

be decremented:

822134 - The Function of Terminal Server CALs in Windows Server

2003

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=822134

When you connect to the TS, you should no longer receive the

warning about the expiration date of your temporary license. That's

the sign that you are now running on Per User licensing.
