Oh hell what have I done?

New PC that I built a couple months ago, i7 920, Asus P6T Deluxe, fx nivida graphics card. Been perfect.

Just switched it off to add an extra fan and second hard drive that came today.... simply plugged them in, all nice and simple. Press power button and there is a small spark of light near motherboard followed by electrical crack sound.

Now nothing is powering up. What the hell have I done? It was only a hard drive and a fan. Nothing is overclocked or messed with in any other way. Motherboard is still getting power it seems, reset and power led glowing away.

Please help, heart is racing a mile a minute right now...

My guess is that when you opened the case and fiddled about installing the new parts, you built up some static electricty on your Mobo,

Which when you then flickered her on, blew something...

I'll let someone such as Tootech or Dalo post on this too just incase I may be wrong.

HOLY HELL IT LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, and the little flash of light was also near a different fan that has blue leds, and since I wasn't looking directly at it, I'm not entirely sure it wasn't the fan lighting up for a second before it powered off. :-(

It was like a fuse blew in the PC. :-(

I took out the new hdd and fan. The only extra thing I just yanked was my storage drive that has all my video and 3D animations on. I turned off the psu from its switch till I saw the motherboard lights power down and turned it back on. terrified to do go near it now... it started up fine. Heart still palpitating though. What caused this....?

the psu is modular, I plugged in a new cable to the psu to power the new hdd. Could this have caused it?

It sounds more like you dropped a screw behind the back of the MOBO and the pop was the transfer of some electricity into the case.

I know its a pain, but wiggle the case (gently as to not dislodge anything) if there is anything loose you will hear it wiggling about, you could take the MOBO out and check, but this is a pain if you have alot connected to it.

The only other thing is if one of the PSU wires is frayed and shorting on something, either way its very dangerous and needs looking at

Wear rubber gloves, and huge wader wellies :D (If you choose to do this you must upload a picture)
