Guest edg Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 I got a new computer and I used the backup feature in Server 2008 to backup the server to a USB portable hard drive, but when I try to restore it would not allow me to use the USB drive so I transferred the backup file to the computer and I still don't have the option of selecting the backup file and I've tried everything; it's only giving me 2 options, the CD drive and Remote shared folder. I would like to know if there is a way around this problem and if not can I just extract what I really need from the backup file? Any help much appreciated. Thanks

The following is required: - What "server backup feature" are you referring to? ntbackup.exe? - What restore program are you using? ntbackup.exe? - On which machine did you run the backup process? - On which machine do you run the restore process? - What is the name & extension of the backup file? - Did you ever perform a test restore? (This is essential - without such a test you will never know if the backup actually worked.) - Have you tried cataloguing the backup file?

Guest edg Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 Re: Help with Server recover I used the backup feature in Server 2008 and the backup consists of one file which has extension .VHD and 13 files with the extension .XML. I only have and use one server and thats the one that I backed up and is trying to restore. I've already done a manual reinstall of most of my applications so at this point what I really need to know is how to extract what I really need from the backup. Thanks for your help. A VHD file is a Virtual Hard Disk. Server 2008 most likely includes some tools to mount them locally, or perhaps the backup program can restore from them. Virtual Server 2005 included a tool called VHDMount which allowed you to mount a VHD file as a local disk. I would imagine that Windows Server 2008 has a similar facility since it has a heavy bias towards virtualisation. -- Chris. > "Pegasus (MVP)" wrote: > >> "edg" <edg@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message >> news:D7929378-9495-46DA-9EDC-94759C4567F9@microsoft.com... >>> I got a new computer and I used the backup feature in Server 2008 to backup >>> the server to a USB portable hard drive, but when I try to restore it >>> would >>> not allow me to use the USB drive so I transferred the backup file to the >>> computer and I still don't have the option of selecting the backup file >>> and >>> I've tried everything; it's only giving me 2 options, the CD drive and >>> Remote >>> shared folder. >>> >>> I would like to know if there is a way around this problem and if not can >>> I >>> just extract what I really need from the backup file? >>> >>> Any help much appreciated. >>> >>> Thanks >> There is not enough information in your post to give you a good >> answer.
