Guest Ken L Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 I have a Win2003 Server Standard R2 w/SP2 with a USB-based hard drive attached which is used for backups. This drive is swapped on a weekly basis with it's "twin brother" (which remains offsite for disaster recovery purposes). Problem that I am having is when I use the system tray tool to "Safely Remove Hardware". About 50 % of the time, the tool comes back and says the drive is in use. If I shut down all the applications on the machine (but not the services), it still says the drive is in use. I've checked the computer management Shared Folders panel and it show no open files or sessions. At this point, I believe it is one of the system services that is preventing the drive from being dismounted. I can shutdown the system and remove the drive while it is down, but I'd like to avoid re-booting this system, if I can. Can anyone suggest how I can track down the offending service or application that is holding the share? Thanks in advance for any help. Please post responses to the newsgroup. Ken

Please post responses to the newsgroup. Antivirus software scanning the drive? Indexing service? Not sure if this would apply to removable drives. Unlikely on a server, but something like Google Desktop search might be indexing the contents. -- Chris M. Remove pants to email me.
