Guest fellenzer Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Why can't I find anything that allows me to compress my back up when it writes to tape? I'm using DAT36/72 4mm Small Business Server 2003

Depending on what you're backing up, you might expect 50GB. I suggest you post in microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs - if you're using SBSBackup (which sits on top of ntbackup) it's already making use of the hardware compression available on your tape drive.

Thank you! My backup has just gotten large enough to want to span two tapes. When it asks for tape two, there isn't any one here to do it. It bombs out and we get an error saying media not found. I've downloaded but not installed a hotfix from microsoft that is supposed to resolve the problem. If we wait until someone comes in in the morning, what affect does writing the second tape have on overall server performance?
Guest Joshua Bolton Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Re: backup compression what affect does writing the second tape have on overall server performance? It will slow it down until its done. Consider changing what your backups backup as in re-evaluate your backup strategy.

If you're using SBSBackup (which runs NTBackup), your job must fit on a single tape. I'd invest in a higher-capacity tape device.... SCSI-attached LTO. Not cheap, but worth it in my book.

No problem. Note that when I suggested you post in the SBS group, I really didn't mean "post your identical message in the SBS group right now" ....you now have two threads going, which =multiposting and which also makes people cranky. Just fyi. > > My backup has just gotten large enough to want to span two tapes. > When it asks for tape two, there isn't any one here to do it.
