Ping packets during AD domain login?

I was sniffing some login info because we have a gimpy server that

takes forever to log in, and we noticed that it was pinging the login

server during the domain login attempt, so I checked with a few other

machines, I couldn't confirm though via any documentation online or in

print, can someone confirm that windows is suppose to ping the login

server during the domain login process in a mixed w2k w2k3 AD

environment?

Yes, it uses ping to detect a "slow connection". This is then used for Group

Policy processing, and cached logins,

Isnt this also used to determine which AD server to auth against when

multiple are present?
