Xeqt Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Hey there, thanks in advance for reading my post. I flicked a switch on the back of my computer which unbeknown to me, changed the voltage. After a bang and a bit of smoke my computer stopped working. Could anyone advice me of what may have happened and what sort of job would it be to sort the problem out. ~Xeqt~ :) Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Hi Xeqt Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help Oh dear Well unless I'm mistaken someone has altered the PSU to a different voltage. Consider this picture here where it is set to 230v, if yours says 115v then oops. This is like taking a box from America running at 115v and plugging it in over here without changing the switch. This also could be considered as vice versa. http://www.it-station.co.uk/images/pcguide/psu.jpg It sounds like the PSU is totally cooked and it may have taken the board with it. Quote
Tootech Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 I agree with Wolfey - try a new power supply, hopefully that should sort it. If not, the mainboard will have been fried, and you will need to replace it. It's also possible that the hard drive/CD drives has been over-volted. They are powered with 5 and 12 volts, and a quick zap of your power supply when set incorrectly may have fried those too. Perhaps the best option would be to take it to a repair shop and ask them to go through and check all the components for you. Quote
