Windows Defender - Ensuring I'm protected?

I'm a little confused here about if my laptop is protected (it is the HP x360 convertible with windows 10) ..I have had the computer for a couple of months now. I did not do anything in terms of anti-virus when I originally started using the laptop, just started using it.

 

 

I am now unsure if Windows defender is actually working, as I am receiving the following error message, as well as seemingly being unable to turn it on in settings.

Turning Real Time Protection on is not an option as it is grayed out...

I also have a trial version of McAfee Livesafe on the computer which has now expired, it was already on the laptop when I purchased...should I just uninstall that?
