windows defender. Scan keeps hanging, uses all processor capabilities

Windows Defender alerts me a scan should be done (i've put everything on automatic so this is strange in itself). Then when i tell defender to scab, after a while it keeps hanging, and even if i tell defender to stop scanning because everything slows down terribly, it does not improve until i restart. The animalware Service executable is taking up most of the processor and memory capacity.
