Out of TS License or so

Dear guru,

 

Recently, my TS/Citrix users (more than one) encountered login

problem, it gave an pop-up dialog saying "To log on to this remote

computer, you must have Terminal Server User Access Permission on this

computer. By default, members of ...".

It looks like a Windows TS error than Citrix and all those client PCs

are Windows XP which have been connected to our TS/Citrix farm

(Win2k3) successfully before. This errors are total random, I could

see there's an active session from the Citrix Console from that user.

Total of 200 TS per user CAL in three TS different licensing servers

LS currently, where LS_1 = 85 license, LS_2 = 115, LS_3 = 0. The

average number of user is around 100. The forth LS has been

disconnected from my network.

 

Running tscc.msc from our TS, the LS discovery mode is auto and

pointed to 4 LS.

 

1. If the CAL license is *per user*, is there any chance that the same

user connect to the TS server where the server asking for two

different license on multiple license server LS?

2. Will the TS server connect to/ask the CAL from any of three LS

randomly?

3. Will the license issue to a single (same) user on each LS?

4. Normally, the LS will issue a temp license if it is running out of

*valid* license. What happen if the TS connect to the LS where has no

or insufficient TS license?

5. Restrict user to one session (from tscc.msc) has been turned on, is

it the reason to restrict the users from launch multiple applications

from the same TS?

Any ideas will be appreciated.

Per User TS CALs are currently unmanaged, which means that they are

never issued at all. The TS just checks if it can locate a

Licensing Server.

If you check in the TS Licensing manager, you should see that your

Per User TS CALs all have "N/A" (not applicable) under the headings

"Issued".

 

Have you checked the licensing mode of your Terminal Servers? I

suspect that they are still configured to use the default licensing

mode of Per Device. If that's the case, they will never "see" your

Per user licenses.

Check in terminal Services Configuration - Server settings.

Yes, checked, I could see N/A under the "Issued" column and the mode

is Per User.

Questions:

1. Does it mean when the TS will not verify whether there are

sufficient license in the LS that it is connecting?

2. Which implied even though TS is connecting to a LS which have no

license installed? As you can see there is 4 LS has been published in

our domain, only 2 of them have TS licenses installed when the third

one got zero license and the last one has been disconnected from

network.

3. What is the purpose of multiple LS? for redudancy? for

geographically location?

4. How should I allocate those LS if all the TS is hosted locally?

1 + 2: that's correct. The TS verifies only that it can locate a

valid License Server.

 

3 + 4 : yes, multiple License Servers are recommended for

redundancy. Not for remote sites, since usually your TS is located

centrally, and it's the TS which contacts the LS. Clients never

have direct contact with a LS, so your LS should be located on the

same network as the TS.

 

The error message that you sometimes get can mean both a real

permission problem and a licensing problem, so that doesn't help

very much.

 

But I can imagine that it is generated when your TS tries to

contact the LS which is offline.

You should do one of the following with this server:

a) if it should keep it's role as LS: bring it online again

b) otherwise: uninstall TS Licensing Services from the server,

thereby removing it's entry from AD. Also remove it from the list

of preferred TS Licensing Servers in your GPO or tscc.msc.
