Guest Matt Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 Hi Folks, I have a 2003 updated server with Exchange 2003 and SMS for Exchange on it. I have cleaned up all temp files, uninstalled all unnecessary programs, cleared my quarantines, etc. I keep slowly losing space still though and I cannot figure out why. I am virus free, no spyware since I have gotten rid of all types of temp files, and cannot figure out why I keep slowly losing space. Are there spots in Windows where there are log files I could clear or anything else at all that might accumulate data over time? Thanks in advance!
Guest Jeff Stockamp Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 Re: free up space You said you have Exchange on it ... that will consume alot of space and grow dynamically. Are the database files on the same drive where your free space is declining? - Jeff "Matt" <Matt@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:CC56E003-8660-4DD3-9F95-B63A02CF13FA@microsoft.com... > Hi Folks, > I have a 2003 updated server with Exchange 2003 and SMS for Exchange on > it. > I have cleaned up all temp files, uninstalled all unnecessary programs, > cleared my quarantines, etc. I keep slowly losing space still though and I > cannot figure out why. Guest SBS Rocker Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 Re: free up space you didn't mention the pagefile.sys that you can move. You also mention you have Exchange so moving the Exchange databases is also an option. Depending on your memory it could free up 2-4 GB. You can also download TreeSize (freeware) that will show where you disk space is be taken. Guest Matt Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 Re: free up space Hey Jeff! Actually no, that is on a separate drive. This is just holding the Symantec and the OS. Thanks! You did not say how big your system partition is and where your Exchange Data Store resides. Depending on your answer, your best bet may be to clone the system partition to a larger disk instead of tinkering with temp files etc. Remember that disks are cheap!
Guest Matt Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 Re: free up space Hey Rocker! I cannot find the pagefile.sys anywhere. I have run a search on all drives on my server. Is it hidden beyond the folder option's hidden files? Also, Exchange is on a separate drive. This one just has my symantec and OS. Thanks! Guest SBS Rocker Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 Re: free up space Well that depends on your definition of what cheap is. I recently came across the situation where my drive was down to 8 GB free (less than 5%). the current configuration is RAID5 4x73 GB 15K SCSI HDD plus a hot spare. I purchased an additional 73 GB drive for about $250 and extended the partion. I didn't think $250 was cheap but price was not an issue at the time. Guest Matt Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 Re: free up space Well I have a C that is 14.6 GB and a D that is 53 GB. My Exchange lies on the D so just the symantec and OS are on C. If cloning is the best way to go, can you point me toward a place online describing how to do this? Thanks Pegasus! Then go to Advanced -> Performance -> Advanced -> Change under Virtual Memory, to see where your pagefiles are defined, and on which drives they reside. Pagefile.sys probably won't show up in a search, unless perhaps if you've enabled both search for hidden files, and search for system files, but this is a pretty poor way to find it. Of course even if you did find it that way, you'd still have to go to the dialog I mentioned in order to change it's size or location. As a nice little performance tip, you'll save a few cpu cycles by placing your pagefile on a seperate drive from your system installation (unless you're in a raid array, at which point this would be redundant) so that you won't be trying to access the system and the vram through the same channel at the same time. Hope this helps.

Guest Pegasus \(MVP\) Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 Re: free up space My definition of "cheap" is simple: If the cost of the system administrator's time (salary + overheads) in fixing the problem for a few months is comparable to the cost of new disks then the disks are an excellent bargain, because they should last a few years if properly sized.
