I wonder whether members could give me any ideas regarding XP Media freezing after boot up, well at least the mouse is. There does not seem to be a problem with the mouse and this does not happen every time I boot up but is happening more than before. Re-booting seems to sort the problem out.

I run AVG Free, Ccleaner & Spybot.

Everything is working normally according to my system information and I did a chkdisk last week through Tune Up Utilities 2007.

Can anyone advise if this is an indication of a problem to come or have a simple remedy for me?

Does your mouse connect to a USB port?

If so, try a different port.

Also, when the mouse freezes, can you use the keyboard.

Try Ctrl Alt & Del to bring up Task Manager - does it work?

Also try pressing the Windows key & E - does that open Windows Explorer?

Re my query about freezing

Thank you for replying- no none of your suggested solutions work. I connect via usb and I have put a new mouse into the usb port on the keyboard but the new mouse is freezing as well. The only solution when the mouse freezes is to turn the computer off with the power on/off button and this usually sorts it out. I am using an old keyboard but don't know if that is the cause. My computer and keyboard are about 5 years old but everything has been fine until now.

Would you suggest I plug the mouse directly into my computer and see if it still happens. If it doesn't then I suppose it must be the keyboard that is faulty?

If none of the other suggestions work ie pressing the Ctrl Alt Del, I think your PC is freezing up rather than just the mouse stopping working.

Can you let us know the make and model of your unit.

How long does it run for before it freezes?

It may be getting too hot inside, it may be a program that is causing the problem or it maybe a hardware fault.

How confident are you in looking inside the box and maybe giving it a clean if needed?

Sorry for not replying sooner - been away.

My computer is an HP 7590 uk a.

It does not work when boot up is finished, although as I mentioned in my earlier post it seems to right itself on a second boot up by turning it off via the power button.

I did have problems a few months ago with a noisy graphics fan but this has been sorted out by my local computer repair shop who took the fan out and cleaned and oiled it.

There is no noise now and he also gave the computer a clean inside but he told me that it was very clean, hardly any dust.

No, I am afraid I am not very confidant about doing anything inside the computer.

Ok Found it now.

Can we please make sure we are defining all the issue.

As I understand things, the PC boots up as far as your desktop whenever you start it up, correct?

Most times you are unable to move the pointer with your mouse, but you can see the pointer, correct?

About every other time that you boot your PC everything seems to work, correct?

Do the keys seem to work for you? It you press the windows key will the start menu come up, or is that frozen too?

When you say you get no noise do you mean NO noise at all or do the fans just seem to be just running quietly?

In answer to your points

The PC boots up as far as the desktop.

I can see the pointer but unable to move it.

PC works on re-boot.

None of the keys work when it is frozen.

The fans run quietly in the background.

You never did indicate whether you tried connecting the mouse directly into a port on the PC. I take it you were connecting it to a port on your keyboard.

Okay can I just ask to clarify this.

Is it JUST your mouse that freezes or everything?

You stated at the beginning that your mouse froze but then earlier on that none of the keys worked, thus indicating that your keyboard froze too.

There is nothing to back this up but a gut reaction, but the one constant in all this is the keyboard that you have used both on its own and as a "hub" for the mouse. I would suggest that you try a different hard wired board as well. Preferably one that connects using a ps2 connector rather than usb. (not usb with an adapter)

To answer Dirty Polo - my mouse and keyboard freeze at the same time.

The keyboard is an old Advent one and it is connected to my computer via a usb cable.

The original mouse was also an Advent and connected via usb hubs on either the left or right side of the keyboard.

Both of the above came with my Advent computer before the HP one that I am using now.

I am now using a new Trust wired mouse connected to a usb port on my computer rather than the keyboard.

Maybe it is time for a new keyboard as well.

When you get to my age one starts to forget how long one has been using things!

I dread to think how old the Advent keyboard is, I just keep using it as it seemed to work ok but I am thinking that it won't do any harm to try a new one.

I did get a wireless keyboard with my HP computer but I put it in the cupboard as I thought that the wired ones were more reliable.

I will give the wireless one a go and see if it sorts out the problem.

Many thanks for the suggestions so far.

I have now installed a wireless keyboard and mouse.

Both worked correctly after installation and before shut down.

When I came to boot up the computer the following day I had no use of any of the keys on the keyboard and the mouse showed an hourglass but would not move. The computer boots up ok and everything appears on my screen as it should

I powered the computer off and re-booted and everything worked.

This appears to be the same problem that I had with the wired keyboard and mouse, so now I am rather perplexed as to why it is happening.

Any further suggestions welcome.
