Guest alvinamorey@notmail.com Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 I just bought a mobo and cpu for an AMD 2600ghz. My fastest computer to date has been this P3 1000ghz. I know win98 was never intended to run on such a fast computer. Will it run ok? Will it start a fire from going so fast <LOL>. Thanks
Guest Paradoxdb3 Posted November 17, 2007 Posted November 17, 2007 RE: Putting Win98se on a P4 2600mhz Actually, I think your computer might just be the one doing the burning while Windows 98 just turns to ashes! Apparently there's timing issues with a CPU of that speed and Windows 98. You said 2600GHz, but I think you must have meant 2.6GHz? And invariably someone responds incorrectly with this: Paradoxdb3 wrote: > Apparently there's timing issues with a CPU of that speed and > Windows 98. Windows 95 and the first edition of Windows 98 (aka "Gold" or FE) have a problem in the file NDIS.VXD that causes issues when the CPU is faster than 2.1 ghz. Windows 98 SE (second edition) does not have this problem. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312108 The fastest CPU I've had running win-98 on so far is a Celeron-D 3.46 ghz. When I get a good heatsink for that CPU I will overclock it to 4.5 (or higher) ghz.
Guest Paradoxdb3 Posted November 17, 2007 Posted November 17, 2007 Re: Putting Win98se on a P4 2600mhz Hey, 98 Guy... So everything runs beautifully with a CPU clock speed over 2.2 GHz? Does that make the flash movies (like on You-Tube) play smoothly? What suggestions would you have to make them run very smoothly? I have a 355MHz processor and watching those flash movies is worse than watching paint dry! "98 Guy" wrote: > alvinamorey@notmail.com wrote: > > > I just bought a mobo and cpu for an AMD 2600ghz. Oh, yes, 2.6ghz or 2600mhz :) What I find odd, is that this 1ghz computer never made anything faster than my 266mhz. But that 266 was overclocked and it was always extremely fast. It lasted 8 years, and I never had reason to upgrade. This IBM bios has no way to overclock. In some ways, it's actually a tad slower than the old 266, and I got 3 times the ram. >"98 Guy" wrote: > >> alvinamorey@notmail.com wrote: >> >> > I just bought a mobo and cpu for an AMD 2600ghz. Guest Dan Posted November 17, 2007 Posted November 17, 2007 Re: Putting Win98se on a P4 2600mhz I wanted to let you know Paradox that I am currently now running 98 Second Edition and XP Professional on a P4 3.4 Ghz. and both operating systems are working fine. I watched a youtube video on 98 Second Edition and it ran well. I also use Comcast Cable connection so that makes a difference as well in viewing videos on-line.

YouTube video's play just fine on a P-3 850 mhz with 256 mb ram and ATI AIW 128 Pro AGP card.

I can play DVD movies and other video files quite satisfactorily, using PowerDVD or VLC Media Player, on a Dell OptiPlex GX1, 550 mhz, with 256 MB of RAM and the onboard 4 MB video adapter. YouTube videos also play OK online, provided that the Internet connection is fast enough to keep loading ahead of the playing rate. -- --Donald Davis [To respond by e-mail, remove "blackhole." from the address.]
