After about 30 minutes my 56K modem stops communicating but nothing locks up. Also, it won't hangup until a reboot (can hear it over the telephone).

Other tips:

* have tried 2 different modems.

* have tried 2 different browsers.

* have checked modem settings & see nothing suspicious.

* have checked for adware, viruses - nothing.

* no firewall.

Running Windows XP pro sp2.

Thinking it's something in XP, just not sure what.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi ryeman;

How long has this been happening?

I ask because it's displaying classic symptoms of a dialer program being installed.

Have you checked your phone bill for any long distance charges?

What programs did you use to check for malicious software.

Modem stops working

I use Super Antispyware. This XP install is only about 2 weeks old. I first noticed it after installing Bit Torrent which also installs DNA but I uninstalled them & it didn't help.

I have to laugh.

Forget all about using dial up to download anything from a torrent site Ryeman as it would take you forever.

Why do you not have a Firewall?

What Anti Virus software do you possess?

Yes, you are right. It took me about a week to download an 800 mb file!!! Just don't have the $$ for high speed right now. Was using ZoneAlarm firewall just haven't got it on here since the upgrade.

Curiously, I've been on for over an hour this morning & it's working fine.

What upgrade?

Explain further on that please.

Let me get this right, your running bareback to the Net without any protection, ie, Firewall and Anti Virus, yes?

Thanks anyway Match. I've decided to take the plunge & get broadband after all. It will allow me to get my firewall & antivirus going again. My anti-spyware/adware cannot find anything. PC works great except for the modem stopping and then having to reboot. I hope the high-speed doesn't do the same thing?

Wolfeymole: I put this little system together recently. A fresh XP pro sp2 install. Running Firefox and yes, no anti-virus at the moment. I'm very careful!

A dial up internet connection by it's very nature will disconnect you every 2 hours or so anyway Ryeman even it there was no problem.

You will find that broadband is an "always on" connection, it's a lot faster and any other phones in the house are freed up for use unlike dial up which disallowed incoming/outgoing calls.

We would also ask that you reconsider using torrent software as it can lead to catastrophic problems with regard to malware intrusion into your pc.
