CD/DVD drive.DVDs ok CDs will not work

Combined NEC CD/DVD in laptop. DVDs play fine Cds will not work at all. Drive shows up ok on my computer but only clicks with cds inside. No conflicts shown and computer says all is working fine. I have tried many things.deleting upper and lower filters, deleting drivers and re installing but to no avail. I have tried an external cd usb drive and this will also not work.

I have recently deleted Nero and some other software I never used.

Any one else had this problem. If the whole drive did not work I could understand but with it playing DVDs It seems very strange. Please Help!Rawty.

They are not cd-r when the drive might be +r are they?

Yes the drive worked with all types of CD, data, music. software as I said only DVDs play now everything shows up as working fine,crazy.

CD/DVD drives have two seperate heads, one for the CD, and one for DVD, it is possible the CD head has failed. A swap with a known to be working drive would prove that for you if it is possible to do, otherwise a new drive would have to be bought. However that doesn't explain why the external USB drive wouldn't work. Let us know if you can do a swap first and what the result is.
