TSCALs + CALS (W2003)?

We are planning our purchases for next year. We are planning to set up 3

W2003 servers. 2 Citrix PS 4.5 servers (new farm to replace the current

PS4/W2K farm). The 3rd is a "Utility" server (no TS).

I know we will need 3 server licenses as well as 125 "Per Device"

TSCALs. My question is how many CALs will I need? 125 or 3x125?

I assume that you have 125 workstations?

Just like in W2K, the number of server CALs that you need depends

on the licensing mode that you choose for the servers: "Per Device

or Per User" licensing mode (was called "Per Seat" in W2K) or "Per

Server".

With multiple servers, it's nearly always best to choose the "Per

Device or Per User" licensing mode, which means that you need a

single server CAL for each device / user. In your case: 125 CALs.

The only scenario where the "Per Server" licensing mode with

multiple servers is cheaper is when you have many workstations, but

only a few of them are connecting to the server simultaneously,

since the "Per Server" licensing is per concurrent usage.

Example: assume you have a total of 125 workstations, but only 40

of them connect simultaneously. In "Per Server" licensing mode, you

would need 3 * 40 = 120 CALs, which is slightly cheaper.
