Hi

I have a problem with desktop pc running windows xp home edition in the UK:

About a week ago, sound stopped working + all network icons (LAN etc.) no longer appeared so couldn't connect to wireless router / access internet.

I re-loaded XP in Repair mode which seemed to run fine - other than one warning message which appeared towards the end of the re-load:

'windows cannot find C:\windows\system32\tools\delf:confused:olders.exe'

I entered OK and the installation continued. When the PC re-started, hey presto, sound was back / windows media worked again and network options were fine / internet worked fine.

Got back from work yesterday and now when windows is started, although the username icons appear (we've one for each member of the family), when I click on mine or any other user, although the original desktop background is the same as before, no icons / start bar etc. can be seen.

I've tried right clicking on the screen but no drop down menus appear and if I press Ctrl & Esc nothing happens either!!

Would appreciate any advice (I'm not sure if the warning displayed during the initial re-load has anything to do with the problem?)

Many thanks

Malc

If this is originally a Dell machine, the warning message will be in reference to some part of the original Dell set up and should have no bearing on your present problem. For it to have gone faulty again this soon after a Windows repair, suggests something like a hardware fault such as your hard drive. However I am no expert in that area so will pass this on to someone who is.

While waiting for hardware assistance you may want to try to go into safe mode (tap F8 on Startup) and see it the icons etc. are there. You should be able to access the Administrator account in safe mode. If you are able to navigate through that account, set up a new named user administrator account. Retart and boot into normal mode and see if the new account is fully functioning.
