Domain Controller Configuration

Hi,

I am trying to setup a Domain controller ... what should the ideal

configuration of the server be ? In terms of the hard disks?

should it be RAID 1 or RAID 5?

and how many partitions do we need?

Thanks

Hello Sanjay,

Have a look here:

Why not use both if you want?

I have H/W RAID 1 on one set of drives (containing my OS) and H/W RAID

5 on the other drives (containing data and file services for the

network).

Of course my RAID is all h/w controlled...I don't know if that's the

case with what you are trying to set up but I would guess it's a good

probability.

Go with what works for you in your situation. Do some research on

RAID and performance issues with each version to make that decision.

Re: Domain Controller Configuration

Hi,

I think it will be hardware RAID - am planning to buy a HP Proliant DL380.

The link:

is usable but I have a couple of questions.

If I have a RAID 5 for the Windows 2003 O/s. This will also contain Sysvol,

the Active Directory database NTDS.dit - then I suppose I need to keep the

Active Directory log files on another different partition / drive?

Sanjay

DC should be a DC and *ONLY* a DC.

Set it up as a RAID 1 array. Ours are set up with 32GB RAID 1 (smallest

drives available). Be sure to set up more than 1 and back up the System

State of each one on a regular basis. This will keep your network

running regardless of any hardware problems and minimize any down time......

Hi,

What do you mean by "be sure to set up more than 1 ..."

did you mean - that I should have more than one domain controller?

Thanks
