Okay, when the PC wakes up again, can you do the following steps:

- Go to "Control Panel"

- Click on "Administrative Tools"

- Then "Event Viewer".

- Expand the "Windows Logs" folder on the left side,

- Next click on "System"

From here you can see the computer going to sleep and waking up, and so see

what it's running on wake.

Please try to identify what the PC is runningwhen it wakes up, or just reply with a screenshot so we can direct you where to look.

I apologise that this problem is taking such a long time to figure out, but it is a common problem with Vista and there are many, many different solutions that work for different people.

It woke again last night and I have opened the Windows log. Looks to be another useful facility, with a surprising amount of activity going on without my knowledge. It will take a while to try and work out what it means. Will be in touch

The Windows Log shows that the computer "resumed from Sleep" at 0300:13 this morning. The screenshots show the General and Details tabs of this event. Hope you will be able to work out from them why it happened.

Don't worry about the time this is taking. You are being very helpful, and I hope I am learning something in the process.

Hey Mike,

Sorry I haven't been on, had a lot to do offline.

Looking at your screenshots, it seems your LAN/internet could be causing your PC to wake up.

Do you leave your router/modem on when you go to bed?

Also, do you know how to enter the BIOS on startup?

If not, keep tapping either F5 or F8 when the system boots, up, it should say which key to press, to enter Setup or BIOS as it boots up. It may take one or two tries.

- Next can you look for a setting called “WOL, “Wake up ON LAN”, “Remote wake up” or similar.

- Set this setting to “disabled” or "off".

Press f10 to save and exit the BIOS, this will cause your PC to restart again.

Once logged on:

- Launch Device Manager, by clicking start and typing in "Device Manager"

- Expand the Network Adapters section

- right click on the one listed and click on properties

- Next click the “advanced” tab.

- Check the list of options displayed.hey generally include, in their names, words like “WOL”, “Magic packet”, “power management”, "Wake on LAN"

- Either choose to disable all the ones this similar names to the above, or reply with a list of all the ones with the previous examples in their name and we can tell you which ones need disabling.

DirtyPolo, I didn't mean to hassle you - it was just that previously you had responded so promptly that when you didn't this time I thought you might have missed my posting.

There is no Wake on LAN option in my AWARD BIOS but the Network Adapter (in Device Manager) does have a WakeOnLAN From PowerOff option which was enabled, and I have now disabled it. Many thanks for the suggestion.

I shall need to wait for some time before I can be sure the problem is solved, given that it is now only occasionally that the computer wakes during the night anyway.

Here's hoping!

Okay, I will have my fingers crossed too :D

Hope that it can sort the problem out for you :D

After a week of not waking up at night, I'm afraid that like a naughty baby Vista did wake again at midnight last night - at least the Event Viewer log shows it did, although I would have expected to notice it had happened before I retired for the night.

The log (screenshot attached) looks just as it did on 10 March except that the 'resume from sleep' occurred at 0000:16 instead of 0300:13. What is this Power-Troubleshooter which seemed to be involved each time?

DirtyPolo, Vista woke from sleep again exactly 24 hours later, at 0000:13 this morning. What does "Wake Source RTC" mean? Edited by mtav

Hey mike, I'm very sorry but I am afraid to say that I have run out of ideas on this problem.

It seems a very common problem with Vista, I , myself have a sleep problem with Vista too.

I cant find or think of any other possible solutions to try so I shall have to hope and see if any of the other members or team have any ideas on where to go next, other than the obvious of shutting it down each night.

Again, I am very sorry for not being able to find a working solution.

As for the RTC, that stands for Real Time Clock, and it does not mean a single simple solution, it could be many many things that would be classed under RTC as the source of the wake, most are mainly due to the LAN or networking, which is why I asked you do disable anything with those names in my previous post, hoping it would stop the problem.

And again at 13 seconds after midnight this morning. I watched it happen this time. I am checking with BullGuard whether they might be behind it.

This is 62 posts long mtav so it is easier to ask than look,:) but have you mentioned BullGuard before?

I have seen a forum run by bullguard where the same problem was noted and cured by uninstalling. Again, if that has not come up before you may want to try that. A similar problem was also noted by AVG users. Perhaps you may want to give Avira or Avast a try, making sure that the update time is well away from the overnight period. Again if this was mentioned before please feel free to ignore this. :D

No, I hadn't mentioned BullGuard before, but (a) it was set to check for updates at 0300 on Thursdays not daily at midnight (which I have now changed to a daytime event) and (b) I had tried disabling BullGuard to no avail, so it seemed unlikely to be the culprit. I paid good money for BullGuard so I would be reluctant to uninstall it!

Apparently the wakeups are triggered by the Real Time Clock. Does that mean they originate inside the computer rather than coming in from the outside?

I understand your reluctance but, as I said, I have read that Bullguard has had the very effect that you are complaining of and that uninstalling it solved the problem. A similar problem was also encountered with some versions of AVG. I would find the forum again but the information was nothing more than a few postings by members.

As for disabling, while I do not know why you cannot (if I read that properly), disabling AV programs that are causing problems does not always make it go away. Sometimes a full uninstall is necessary.

It is certainly your right to rule it out as a cause but you have had only limited success in solving this to date. To be clear, I am not suggesting that Bullguard is the cause only that it may be.

Just to claify, if you paid for Bullguard then you paid for the license to use it.

If you uninstall it, it should not cause a problem when reinstalling it again after, if it has found to not be the cause.

As long as you have a copy of the license you purchased.

To DirtyPolo, Wolfeymole and anyone else who is interested in the solution to what proved a very intractable problem back in February (hence the number of posts), I eventually discovered that what was causing Vista to wake from sleep at midnight every night was Windows Update. I changed the time at which it ran from midnight to midday. Problem solved. During the day, my computer is usually either on or off but rarely asleep

OK Mike, after such a long running thing I am glad you eventually got to the end by finding it was the Windows update.

Thanks for coming back to let us know.
