Hi all,

I seem to have done something rather dumb. my pc (toshiba portege) was running really slowly, and a friend said to delete programs I didn't use. So i went into Control Panel-> add or remove programs, and deleted what i thought was a sound recording software I'd added.

But, weirdly after about an hour, I stopped being able to hear sounds, like on youtube etc. I also can't adjust the volume of the pc, and when I go into control panel->sounds and audio devices I can't adjust any options. It says No Audio Device in the volume tab.

So, i think i've stupidly deleted the software for my audio device or something? oops.

Any sugggestions for how to get sound back? I don't really know much about computers, so pretty basic info or details would be great. I'm running windows XP, not sure if it's the professional or home version, i think professional.

Thanks so much for any advice!

Have you rebooted your computer since this occurred ari? If not please do so now and let us know if you still have a problem. If you have, or once you have, try doing a system restore to a point before you uninstalled or deleted whatever you did.

If you do not know how to do a system restore please post back.

Ok go to your program files and select Accessories. Under that group select "system Tools" and from the list select "System Restore."

A window will appear, select "restore my computer to and earlier time." You will see a calender. Just select a bold date prior to when the problem arose and click next. Simply follow the directions to restart the computer when prompted. Hopefully whatever you deleted will be up and running on restart.

Let us know.

Thanks! It worked.

Thanks very much, Bee Cee Bee, the system restore worked perfectly. I'll remember that one for the next time I do something dumb!

It would not be a bad idea to remember us before you do. :D

Glad you are all sorted out!
