Hi everyone, my laptop mouse is frozen in the centre of the screen, system repair, start up repair, nothing works. Opened up reged and it seems that the mouse registry has no value. Any idea of how to fix this problem without wiping the c drive, losing all of my files and reinstalling Vista from the backup? Is there a freeware vista data recovery program which I could try to get the files back incase I have to clear the system? Edited by Delapidated1

Are you meaning the mouse and pressure or touch pad in the middle under the keyboard?

If so, do you have or can you borrow a plug and play USB wired mouse, and see if Windows both picks it up, and installs drivers for it, this might also solve the touch pad problem.

If not, get back to us and one of our other mods may be able to help further.

Have you done a system restore back to when the mouse was working. It may also help to check the mouse. Is a wired, wireless, usb or ps2?

Have you made any changes to your registry? Used any registry cleaners?

If all else fails, here are a couple of ways to get your data safe.

If the hardware is not faulty the easiest way is to download a bootable CD, burn it, boot from it and copy all of your data to a USB flash drive.

My personal preference is Knoppix, others I guess will be able to offer alternatives.

Knoppix Linux

Then do a full reinstall.

If that is too much messing about, get hold of a USB drive adapter, take out the drive connect it to the adapter, plug it into another machine and copy off your data that way.
