VSS GatherWriterMetadata error

Running Windows 2003, and always get this error when trying to create a

volume shadow copy:

 

ERROR: COM call "m_pVssObject->GatherWriterMetadata(&pAsync)" failed.

- Returned HRESULT = 0x80070057

- Error text: The parameter is incorrect.

 

This works fine under XP and Vista, but cannot figure out what is wrong

under 2003. Any ideas?
