Guest gizmoandback Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 I am purchasing a used 10gb hard and will need to put win 98 on the drive I was wondering if i have to format it or just use the install disks and that will do it for me.

I would fdisk and format it because any bad sectors will be marked and taken care of during the format. The drive might also have problems with the MBR, boot sectors or FAT tables and it just makes sense to wipe that clean and start fresh.

And it would be a good idea to run SpinRite, at least level 4!

Do your homework first at http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/w98_restore.html with special attention to checklists of what you may need to write down (e.g. Product ID or Key Number) before you wipe the old installation. 2.
