sycho1981 Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Hi all, Anyone know what it means when you get this message. dr watson postmortem debugger has encountered a problem and needs to close. It's usually preceeded by the same message referring to windows explorer and started after my widows movie maker crashed the other day for what i suspect were RAM issues. It seems that i cant access my hdd's while i have this problem thanks Si Quote
Match Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Hi sycho, Dr Watson postmortem debugger is a Microsoft tool for gathering information when an error occurs, there is more information about it here. However now I suspect that you will want to resolve the problem of why your pc keeps crashing! so If you don't mind could you give us some information about your pc, Make, Model and as you say you think that you have a RAM problem the amount of RAM and HDD capacity and space used may be helpful. sycho1981 Posted February 27, 2009 Author Posted February 27, 2009 My pc is a home build with roughly 2.5tb of hdd space , 2.5gb RAM with a dual cpu (1.6GHz?). I'm using service pack 3 on media centre edition 2002 Quote
Match Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 OK so It's not a lack of RAM and XP using your HDD for virtual RAM and having no space problem !! :) So why do you think that it is a RAM issue? can you tell us what Mother Board you have, and the Make and Specification of your RAM and the size of the sticks ie: 2 x 1G and 1 X 500MB and can you tell us if this problem is specific to Windows movie maker or does it affect other programs that you use? Quote
sycho1981 Posted February 27, 2009 Author Posted February 27, 2009 i initially thought it was a RAM issue because, this all started after movie maker crashed several times trying to save quite a large file and ever since then is when i've had the problem. The actual crashing now is when i open windows explorer with the thumbnail setting enabled, if i change the settings to tiles, icons etc then theres no problem but i'm still noticing a bit of slowdown generally. My RAM sticks are verizon(or something that sounds similar) and I have a 2gb with a 500mb(prior to yesrterday i had two 500mb sticks) Quote
Match Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Hi sycho I think that the first thing to try is a system restore back to a point before this problem started, and see where we go from there. you may also want to consider changing your RAM so that it is more evenly balanced, as it will work better that way, but I don't think that this is causing your immediate crashing problem. sycho1981 Posted February 27, 2009 Author Posted February 27, 2009 fair enough, how is it i do that? Quote
Match Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 (edited) Full instructions from Microsoft here, and if if you don't mind report back to us please whether or not this solves your problem, Edited February 27, 2009 by Match Quote
sycho1981 Posted February 27, 2009 Author Posted February 27, 2009 Nope, no good, might be because the only system restore point it's showing is this morning when i uninstalled a program Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 I am really curious as to why you can only find the one restore point. It is clearly not disabled or you would have had none at all. What exactly were you doing in movie maker when these problems began? Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
