Hi guys/gals I`m new to all this so please bear with me. Basically my Pc will not reboot after clicking on restart or after I try to update my bios (which requires auto restart obviously). This seems to be preventing me updating my bios. My PC will shut down fine if shut down is selected from start menu but when selecting restart it will close any open windows and say its shutting down but will freeze at the point where it would normally power down.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received as I am a self confessed dunce when it comes to computers :o

Hi Matteo

first can you give us some information on the make and model of your PC

Second can you be more specific on what you mean by updating your bios?

When you say your pc will freeze on the shut down screen, how long have you left it like that? and what have you done to 'get out of it'?

and finally when you say it shuts down ok from the start menu are you using the little red power button, or the shut down option in the pop up menu?

My pc is a dell dimension e520. I have been trying to update my bios via the Dell support centre and when it shuts down the computer to reboot it freezes after saying shutting down, the screen goes black as if it`s about to reboot but then freezes with the power light still on. I left it in this state for over ten minutes but as nothing happened I had to turn off mains supply and restart computer as normal. The computer will shut down properly using either the red button on start menu or the shut down writing on menu.

Hi Matteo

Just had a look on the dell web site, Just to make sure that you have the right update, and according to dell they have only one update listed, dated 7/11/2007 2.4.0

Is this the Bios update that your trying to install and is there an issue that you are trying to solve by installing it?

Yes this is the bios I am trying to install but there are also other bios updates available and I have tried a couple of them after the 2.4.0 failed but I don`t think it is an issue with the dell updates rather an issue with my PC. When I try to restart my computer at any time whether updating or not I am still getting the same issue occuring. I was trying to get the bios updated as my new memory modules weren`t registering after installation and after phoning Crucial helpdesk (who i`d purchased memory modules from) they suggested trying to update my bios as this may be potential cause.

Hi thanks

was this a problem before you put your new memory modules in ?

and could you tell us the name and specification of the modules?

and could you tell us about any other modifications you have made to your machine from it's standard specification when brought new from Dell

No I think it was a problem before installing new memory modules and these are the only additional items purchased for this computer. The memory modules are 2x1GB 5300 speed

Hey there Matteo,

Does this problem occur everytime you click restart? or just some of the time.

Can you start up into Safemode please. By tapping F8 as it starts up.

Once loaded into startup, try to restart you Pc as you normally would when you got the problem.

If it works fine, then there is a driver/hardware issue causing it.

Please let us know the result :)

Hi just a quick recap to make sure I understand right,

You think that this problem started before you replaced the RAM.

2x1GB 5300speed
I'm assuming you mean Dual-Channel DDR2 SDRAM (533MHz), Can you confirm if this is correct.

and could you also confirm that you have replaced the RAM or Just added to it?

and if you have replaced the RAM can you tell us why?

Hi guys thanks for your help. I tried running my PC from safe mode and then restarting which worked and now it seems to have cured the problem as it is restarting properly from a normal boot up :)

Really appreciate your time and advice,
