My daughter has windows xp home edition and the screen has turned upside down (with the aid of her young son no doubt) I would welcome suggestions

Use Ctrl + Alt + the Up Arrow key to resolve this.

Try the fix Wolfey suggested. It usually works even if it isn't a laptop.

 

On my desktop HP it doesn't work but there is an option it the nvidia control panel to do it on mine. It's hard to find though.

I take it from your reply that ctrl + Alt + the arrow did not work. I do not know what keyboard you use but sometimes using the other ALT key will work. So if you tried the one on the left and it did not work then try the one on the right. (or vice versa) If you have a keyboard with a gr key try that instead of Alt along with ctrl.
