Guest James W. Long Posted November 22, 2007 Posted November 22, 2007 Hi All, Every time I go to install SP2 on Win2k3 Server, the server goes dead, as in locks out all communications both ways. I Cant start the network service, cant start the firewall service and cant ping outside my server. I found a couple things that say to disable the IPSec service, but that doesn't fix it, or change anything. I installed SCW and run it, SCW says it cannot create its database. hmm., was sure I was going to need that..... What I did find was that the RPC endpoint mapper isn't working properly anymore. even though it says it started, nothing can find an endpoint. The machine does not know its name and the DNS log says there is a problem with RPC. so nothing works anymore, but I do not know how to fix it. I have half a clue that the credentials for RPC were changed and I am not sure how to use that information This is a DC with AD integrated DNS. I do not understand what I am supposed to do post sp2 installation to bring the server to normal. Am I the only one with this problem? Thank you, James W. Long.
Guest neo [mvp outlook] Posted November 22, 2007 Posted November 22, 2007 Re: Install SP2 on W2k3 Kills Server Dead. Have you tried disabling the scalable networking pack feature that is included in SP2 for Windows 2003? (http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2007/07/18/446400.aspx contains the netsh command + 2 registry keys that you might find extremely helpful.) "James W. Guest neo [mvp outlook] Posted November 22, 2007 Posted November 22, 2007 Re: Install SP2 on W2k3 Kills Server Dead. I don't have an older Optiplex lying around with that model of network card. Since you didn't mention if this was an onboard or pci network card, I would just ask, do you have another network card you can try? "James W. Guest James Posted November 22, 2007 Posted November 22, 2007 Re: Install SP2 on W2k3 Kills Server Dead. Hi Neo, The pressure is off since I rolled back sp2. I think it Did rule out my card. That card is on the motherboard, and can be disabled in bios. I did in fact try another card, a linksys fast ethernet II card, but again the linksys card was not intrinsically recongnized and wanted a driver which I did not have immediately available, and still I think it was the same problem. I didnt check the linksys card against the win2k3 HCL, so I will. I was pretty burnt so I just gave up and went back to the mobo ethernet and rolled sp2 back. I would have to use and possibly acquire a known supported card for win2k3 to prove it, as you say, and verify it's on the HCL for win2k3. It would be installed before SP2 install so that the upgrade path isnt a problem, or maybe an ndis6 driver would be loaded after the sp2 intall. I will prove this all out soon. Thank you for your help! James W. Long.
