Spools Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 Have you checked your BIOS to see if the drive is still listed? Does it show up in the Device Manager? (right click on My Computer > Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager) If it's still listed in the Device Manager, right click on the drive your having trouble with and select Uninstall. Then reboot and see if it will reinstall the device. Quote
chris_hinks Posted March 1, 2009 Author Posted March 1, 2009 Thank you for getting back to me. I went to device manager and uninstalled the drivers, restarted the computer and checked the bios. The bios found that they were there yet when it had reboot it tryed to install it but failed. The DVD drive is made by LG but when i search for the Driver i can only find firmwear, i also have driver detective but that is saying that there system drivers :S its all very annoying (note that in the second picture the other device is a dvd/rom drive that dosnt work im trying to get the other one to work) Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 (note that in the second picture the other device is a dvd/rom drive that dosnt work im trying to get the other one to work) Which one is the "other device?" If it does not work, why are you still trying to install drivers for it. I suspect you are not. But it does show a a failed attempt. If you are comfortable with going into the PC, I would suggest that you remove the non working drive. Go back to your device manager and make certain that is is uninstalled. At the same time follow Spools' instructions a second time and see if that resolves the issue. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
Match Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 Hi Chris just reading through your posts, You mention that you have been trying to get another drive to work, Can you tell us if it is still in the pc and connected and whether you have checked that all the cables are in place, and I'm a little concerned that you may have solved one problem but caused another if you have been swapping cables about have you bent any of the pins on the connectors, also if you have a spare or another pc have you tried the drive in that one to see if it is a drive problem? chris_hinks Posted March 1, 2009 Author Posted March 1, 2009 I have no removed the other DVD/rom drive. this drive was installed about a year ago after i salvaged it from a computer in my house. It didnt work then and it hasnt since i just didnt get round to taking it out. the other drive has been working up untill about a month ago so i susspect that it has nothing to do with this other drive. although i was trying to download new drivers when it happened. i was doing this using Driver detective. It shows up on the Bios as a Master drive now i uninstalled and restarted it and it came up with the a failed attempt again. The drive is called "HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4163B ATA Device" Quote
DirtyPolo Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 (edited) the other drive has been working up untill about a month ago so i susspect that it has nothing to do with this other drive. although i was trying to download new drivers when it happened. i was doing this using Driver detective Hi there chris. After reading the above quote, I would like to ask, did it get as far as installing a new driver? or not? Can you please try following Spools advice to get to Device Manager, then find this device mentioned above, (the one that WAS working). Right click on the device and select properties, There should be a button that says "Roll Back Driver" or similar, please can you click this and let it roll back the device driver to the previous version. If this does not solve your problem with this drive, do the same again, but click on "Update Driver" and let it search automatically online for the latest version. We would not recommend using any 3rd party Driver update programs such as the one you mentioned. Windows is perfectly capable of handling driver updates, and if not, the manufacturer's website will have all the updates needed. Let us know how you get on, apologies for the huge amount of answers and questions you are being asked right now. Also to make it clear which device we are talking about, please cna you list them in the following way: Drive that was never working: - Drive that recently stopped working: - Thanks. chris_hinks Posted March 1, 2009 Author Posted March 1, 2009 I looked at the propertys and i couldnt roll back the drivers. i then updated them as the picture shows and it said that a driver is there but its a driver for a CD-rom drive The drive that is working is a: LG multi DVD drive is the only one in the picture The drive that DON'T work is currently at the bottom of my bin after being smashed up with a large hammer Quote
Match Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 Hi just a little thought have you tried disabling AVG then installing the drivers? Quote
Tootech Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 This is an IDE drive isn't it? Do you have the jumpers set correctly for your setup? Best is either CS jumper on DVD drive, or MS, and connect it to Secondary Master IDE socket on the board, and the end of the IDE cable - not the middle connector. Can you confirm how you have it setup now. Quote
