Plastic Nev Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 Hi Mark and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help, Can you please tell us a bit more about your PC. Make, model number, a self build or built by someone else, etc. Also when did your problem start, and how long was it before the problem happened. We would also like to know if the windows XP home was pre-installed or not. there are many reasons why that your PC will not go beyond the initial start up, so as much information you can give us will be a great help to us to help you through it. Spools Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 When you say you just set it up, do you mean you built it yourself and just finished installing the OS or do you mean you just pulled it out of the box and turned it on? For how long did it work ok? Did you do anything different (ie install software or hardware) since the time when it worked? Quote

BeeCeeBee Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 (edited) Have you tried to boot into safe mode or try the "last good configuration" option. Just restart the pc and begin tapping on the F8 key when it starts to boot. If all goes well you should see this screen http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn266/FPCH/win2ksafemode2.jpg Just navigate through it using the arrows and enter key. Try "last know good configuration" first and if that doesn't work then safe mode. Safe mode will look different, the sceen will have large icons and will not be set to your resolution. That is normal. Please try this and let us know how you make out and we will go from there. Edited March 1, 2009 by BeeCeeBee Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain

Neither of these options have resolved my problem Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Can you please give us some insight as to what you were doing on the PC before this started happening as this can be vital. mark_sufc Posted March 2, 2009 Author Posted March 2, 2009 Can you please give us some insight as to what you were doing on the PC before this started happening as this can be vital. Failing that, you have a hardware issue, and its most probably linked to the HDD i was trying to get my brothers dongle to connect to the internet but there wasn't a good enough signal so i simply moved the pc into another room and thats when the problem started at first it was just the background picture on the home screen so i turned it off to restart it then it just started continuously rebooting Quote
Spools Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 By dongle, do you mean a USB storage or wireless device? If so, have you tried removing that device before powering up the PC? Quote
mark_sufc Posted March 2, 2009 Author Posted March 2, 2009 I have reinstalled windows xp and i seem to have corrected the problem but now my desktop home screen has got relly large icon and the task bar is really large i have tried to resolve this but with no joy Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Hopefully this is just an easily adjustable screen resolution issue. Simply right click on your desktop where there is no icon. On the menu that appears click properties and then the settings tab. You will see a slider on the right side. If you can give us the size and shape of your monitor (note the 1 and 2 screen sizes) we can tell you the recommended resolution. It would appear, though, that yours may be set too far to the left. Moving it without knowing the specific size will do no harm. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
Spools Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 A complete reinstall seems a bit drastic but if it works... The problem you're having is most likely due to your graphics card drivers (or lack thereof). You need to download the current drivers for your card. Then, you can adjust the screen resolution by following: Start > Control Panel > Display > Settings tab > adjust screen resolution slider toward More EDIT: jinx! Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 It is possible that you are missing the proper drivers but please try to set the resolution first. If you are able to do it and it works then there is probably no need to look to the drivers unless other issues emerge. Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
mark_sufc Posted March 2, 2009 Author Posted March 2, 2009 i have tried to change the screen resolution with the slider bar which is set to the left hand side but it wont move however i do have a spare monitor/tv which i could use once i get it back from my mate if that would change anything Quote
BeeCeeBee Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 No it does mean that the drivers are probably missing for your graphics card. Do you have any discs that may have come with your PC? Are you able to locate your graphics card in device manager? Quote "Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain
mark_sufc Posted March 3, 2009 Author Posted March 3, 2009 I have found in the device manager screen that there is a yellow ? on the following multimedia audio controller an bus controller video controller(vga compatible) i cannot update the drivers i have no other discs i cannot roll back the drivers Quote
Plastic Nev Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 Hi, we may need some more information now about the graphics. What we need is to know if there is a separate graphics card, or is it on board, in other words part of the mother board. Then we need to know any manufacturers details, if a separate card, the card type, model and make. If on board, then whatever you can find out about the mother board and the graphics controller, again model, type, and make. Also, have you tried letting Windows search the net for drivers?
