Right click on your desktop Blackdog and when you see "arrange icons by" make certain that "show desktop icons" is ticked.

If beeceebee's idea doesn't work it may be that you have a corrupt user profile.

Logon in Safe Mode as Administrator

Use Windows Explorer to have a look down the Documents and Settings folders and look for your logon name. There will also be a 'Temp' Username listed.

Have a look in the My Documents and My Pictures areas - are your documents still there?

If so, create a new User Account, reboot, logon to your new account - that will set it up, then copy over your data.

Microsoft have a quick guide here

How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile in Windows XP

Also, if you use Outlook or Outlook Express your mail accounts will need moving over - if you need to do that, come back and we'll go through it.

Thanks

Thanks for the replies but I have already tried both of these and nothing has changed the only other piece of information I can give you is the laptop was running some sort of scan disk check with a message not to touch the key pad unfortunely by accident a key was touched .Next time the laptop was switched back on icons gone and no progs in the start menu plus all my docs gone.
