Licencing Shenanigans

We have a W2K3 Terminal Server with 40 per-device CAL's. We have training 35

PCs that use Citrix to connect to this Terminal Server. This week, we can no

longer connect to the Terminal Server as it says that there are no licences

available.

When checking the licences, we can see that some devices are holding two or

three CALs and we can also see some of our machines that we used to connect

to the Server for troubleshooting.

What we would like to do is to clear out all of these licences and then

start over. We have tried de-activating the Server but this has had no

effect and the licences still remain. How do we clear out all of these

licences?

Re: Licencing Shenanigans

You can't really release licenses (but read on...)

For the clients that you used to troubleshoot the server, that

shouldn't be a real problem. These licenses will expire

automatically, and become available again after their expiration.

You should always have some licenses for this purpose, and they

will need a TS CAL.

Resetting the licensing database is only possible by deleting it,

and then calling the Clearinghouse and ask them to re-issue your

licensepack (since you cannot install the same licenses more than

once).

But you must first try to solve the problem with the multiple

licenses to single clients. Resetting the licensing database is

useless if these clients continue to take multiple licenses,

because you will end up with the same situation again after a short

time.

AFAIK, this problem is only known for thin clients with old

firmware. Are you using thin clients?

Thanks for the reply. We are using Thin Clients so I will check and see that

the firmware levels are up to date on them.

Does anyone know how long it takes to blow away the Server and then get

Microsoft Clearinghouse to reissue the licence pack?

Provided that you have the correct paperwork with the license pack

numbers, the call shouldn't take you more than an hour or so. Be

prepared for a reboot, though.

Re: Licencing Shenanigans

Last time, it took about 15 minutes. Certainly should not take more that

30+ minutes. I was caught off guard the first time by the requirement

that I had to reboot....... Problem was that this was also the VPN

server ....... :-(
