hi all, first of all thanks for u all taking the time to respond to my tedious posts regarding the tower and case issue with my hdd, its all been sorted now as i found a cheap and cheerful tower case in a second hand shop!

but....

i have plugged my hdd in, (IDE) and set the jumper to master, i have then installed a CD rom drive and set it to slave with the jumper (both r running off the same IDE cable)

but i dont know how to configure my bios, when i go into it it says no primary master/slave/ secondary master/slave, and when the pc loads up normally i just keep getting " no operating system found"

i have my win xp disc in the CD drive and am just waiting to load it all up, but cant get past this, anyone able to tell me what to do in a little " step-by-step" list?!

:D

Did you put the hdd on the furthest connector on the ribbon and the cd drive on the middle connector?

If so alter the first boot sequence to cdrom, save the settings and exit.

On the POST screen on boot up it will say Press F2 or Del (or other keys) To Enter Setup

This then gets you into the bios.

Look for Boot at the top as shown in this picture and change the first boot order to cdrom.

Depending on your bios it may also come under Advanced.

To save any change the usual button is F10 but check to make sure.

You have made sure the short end of the ribbon cable is firmly attached to the board?

If so change the jumper/s to CS on the hdd and report back.

If you have just 1 hard drive and 1 CD/DVD drive, the best arrangement is to connect the hard drive to the Primary IDE interface on the motherboard, and the CD drive to the secondary IDE interface on the motherboard, both as Master or Cable Select (CS).

For the moment, and to troubleshoot/ get you up and running, disconnect the CD drive from the IDE cable, boot up into the BIOS and see if you can see your hard drive.

Concentrate on the hard drive, its settings and getting your system to boot, worry about the CD drive later.

All of your BIOS settings for the Primary Master device should be set to Auto.

Can you see it in the BIOS?

Help needed before i smash another monitor!

hi all,

i have successfully configured my bios to boot from cd first, however when the XP disk goes to work my monior keeps going off saying "DPMS" despite it being screwed in tight to the graphics card, i've already broke one monitor in temper (childish i know, but i am very short fused) and really need this sorting, does anyone know whats causing this?

i literally have steam coming out of my ears!

DPMS is Display Power Management System and it relates to compatability between your graphics card and the monitor. I am frankly not sure how. Assuming that this is the same monitor that worked before (and with your temper one can not be sure ) it would seem that you may have done more than change your boot options in the bios.

This is not an area that I am comfortable and suggest you wait on someone better equipped to direct you in the bios. Preferably without breaking another monitor.

ok then mate, my monitor is a ADi MicroScan M700 19inch, and i'm trying to plug it into a GeForce 64 graphics card, it loads up, says press any key to boot from disc, when i do, i get the windows blue screen then the monitos just switches itself off, u pretty certain its a BIOS option?
Posted
p.s., if i dont connect the power lead to the cd drive, then the pc loads up to give me a screen saying windows is missing a file, a .dll in system 32 or something, when i connect the cd drive, sometimes i dont even get that far!

Kingpin what I have done is a little research on something that I know little about. I beleive that it is very possible that it is a bios issue. I also know that someone like Tootech, Dalo Harkin or Dirty Polo who deal with hardware issues will be on soon enough. If it were me I would wait.

thanks for helpin tho mate, hopefully this should be the last issue before i'm up and running!

the monitor i am using now is the one that is giving me all the problems, (this is the monitor spared from my rage earlier lol) so i cant understand why it wont work with the other comp!

(just trying to give as much info as possible)

Kingpin, do you know the model number of your motherboard? If not, was your PC a prebuilt system (ie Dell, Gateway, HP, etc)? If it was prebuilt, can you give us the exact model number from the label on the back/side/bottom?

This does sound like a setting in your BIOS but it will be easier to help you adjust the settings if we have an idea of what BIOS options are available to you.

hi mate, it was a prebuilt machine,590 emachines, pentium 4 2.4ghz, which i have installed into a completely new tower, i'm using a ADI microscan M700 monitor and the model number (on the old case mind) is EMACHINES 590 (UK) PART NO: 904.042, (Geforce 4mx 440se - dont know if relevant or not)

im desperate to get my new comp running

another tedious problem, one after the other!

hi guys, as mentioned in my previous thread regarding bios settings for me to install windows xp,( thx for the help mind, i have now configured it correctly)

i am now stuck on a weird and tedious new problem which literally is driving me up the wall

basically, when i start my machine, SOMETIMES the monitor will load up the emachines page, then it will go straight to "press any key to boot from cd" - which i do, then the windows xp screen comes up, - (the blue screen saying initialising installation), then, as soon as it does, my monitor turns itself off - the green light turning to orange and thus, i have to keep turning my machine off. i dont know a lot about bios settings, but i have chose video card setting to AGP instead of PCI, at other times, as soon as my CD rom drive connected, it will just go to sleep and i'll get DPMS message, if i leave the cd rom drive disconnected, i get, windows is missing a .dll file from system 32

system info

it was a prebuilt machine,590 emachines, pentium 4 2.4ghz, which i have installed into a completely new tower -(see previous threads lol), i'm using a ADI microscan M700 monitor and the model number (on the old case mind) is EMACHINES 590 (UK) PART NO: 904.042, (Geforce 4mx 440se - dont know if relevant or not)

can anyone shed any light on this, and also, i have tried installing another graphics card, which done the same thing,

do i just need to get a new monitor? - (but this monitor giving me all this grief is fine when i'm using THIS pc) so i really am clueless, and, of course, have my hammer at the ready! :D

Hi Kingpin, first can you please keep to this one thread, all of your problems are related so starting new threads only serves to create confusion.

Now then much earlier, you mention you have a windows XP disk, I just want to know is it a full XP operating system disk, or a OEM disk, or a system recovery disk and also where did it come from please.

Hi again, from what you have said, so far, there is nothing wrong at all with the monitor, it is the system shutting down and therefore not sending a signal to the monitor. The reason for this shutdown is down to the the disk you have, which being an E Machines is only a recovery disk and not a full XP OS disk. Considering your hard drive is now empty of everything, that disk cannot work. What you now need is a full or OEM version of XP. Sorry but you will have to buy one.

so my copy of windows xp is causing this then?

i was actually going to say, whenever the disk drive is connected with XP in, thats when it crashes, so must get me an XP disk.

when i do, will the installation go ahead without the monitor going off u think?

Posted

Hi again, just to avoid confusion, at least mine :D

The disk you have, came with the original E Machines computer yes?

The hard drive you now have in, is that also from the E Machines? or from a different machine?

I know you have said the mother board is E Machines originally, but the hard drive needs to be also for that disk to have even a chance.

I will explain why--

The E Machines so called XP disk actually doesn't have much or any of the XP system on it, all it is there to do is to activate the original operating system that was pre installed in a hidden partition when the computer was built.

Now if that partition isn't there, as it won't be if from a different machine, or if for some reason it has become damaged or deleted, the recovery disk becomes a table mat.

hi tootech,

broke into my savings and purchased me a new copy of windows XP pro, like plastice nev said, it was my disk that was causing the problems and the reason for my monitor turning off was a dodgy cd rom drive, im assuming, after i installed a new one it worked fine!

thanks for all the help guys!
